    Advice on a first boat

Usually, but this little gem has been out there in the Seattle neighborhood for some time. https://anchorage.craigslist.org/boa/5939347760.html It's a larger inboard 350 V8, but it has a jet drive, a Hamilton 212 to be exact, and this combo is actually very efficient. Jet boats are very...

    Advice on a first boat

These boats are nice, and the market is fairly saturated with so many SAFE Boat Inc Defender 25 RBS being liquidated. Check www.gsaauctions.gov and see. You can get these around the country with engines and seats for varying prices, but $20-45k depending on what they left on the boat and...

    90 ETEC

I just had a chance to use a brand new ETEC 90 a couple weeks ago on a boat I rented. By brand new, I mean zero hours. Not even broken in. It was a small, 17' Stott Craft deep V skiff, self bailing, very cool boat with good self-bailing decks, etc. The ETEC did not like being run at low RPM...

Survival 70 Days in SE AK

We had lots of bear trouble trying to maintain a camp. We cooked in a cabin, and slept in tents, behind an electric fence, and well armed. We stored our food hung in trees and in a couple bearproof containers. But we largely subsisted off the land. Storing pee in a bottle and dumping it out...

Open Net Fish Farming in The Strait of Juan de Fuca 2017

In AK we make a ton of extra salmon with additive hatcheries. These have some issues, but nowhere near the issues net pens and farming brings. Hatcheries aren't great for restoring lost runs, but can sure grow some extra fish at a pretty low cost both economically and ecologically. As for...

Survival 70 Days in SE AK

I lived on Admiralty for 4 months during the late summer early fall. It was not all that hard to get enough food. Blueberries and salmonberries were abundant. Pink salmon were everywhere, halibut were around for the taking if you knew how to do it, and there was even a deer on the table...

    Bottom Paint

This. My boat is in Alaska, and I'm not moving it to Florida. It's a not really an issue in our harbor (now galvanic corrosion on the other hand...). I spoke to a lot of people before I had my bottom painted, and most commercial operators for many decades. Blisters a not really common in...

    New gadget combo from Garmin

All true, but at least when DeLorme was on its own you could de activate the plan when you weren't using it. I haven't used SPOT in awhile, but they were 12 month contracts. You do need to pay for service using these. EPIRB and PLB have no cost after you purchase, but you do need to register...

    New gadget combo from Garmin

This is a great point, and something I failed to mention. I also carry a PLB on my person. They are tiny and have a stronger signal than any of the inreach or SPOT offerings, or similar. All about redundancy without bulk.

    New gadget combo from Garmin

We use these on the job and replaced about eight SPOT messengers with four of these. They are absolutely worth their weight in gold. For the cost, this is absolutely the most capable and reliable satellite communicator. The greatest advantage it offers is confirmation that a distress call...

    Bottom Paint

I went the easy route and sanded my bottom and slapped two coats of interlux on there. It's holding strong. My bottom was far from clean before the sanding and was by no means perfectly prepared. The only place I've lost any paint after two years basically in the water year-round was on the...

    Outer Banks

The ICW is very nice and accessible to you. If you're talking about the next few months, and are talking still during the winter you want to avoid the ocean. It's challenging out there in your neighborhood.

takes a licking and keeps on cruising

Interesting as they are quickly liquidating many of their SAFE Boat 25 RBS. It is certainly a buyers market for one, and they are going with seats and motors now for under $50k, sometimes way under. They are very simple to control, and with electronic controls on the engines I'm surprised it's...

    Oars on a Cruiser

One aspect of packing some backup oars that might keep you out of real trouble would be to simply keep the bow pointed towards the waves. You wouldn't be able to concern yourself with making headway, but you might be able to keep your boat from broaching if your engine failed in heavier seas...

    Radar/chartplotter combo

Yes. If you are serious about a cruise up north you should have these things. I wouldn't be without a chart plotter and a backup (that could be an ipad/iphone). Many modern plotters have wifi capabilities and will mirror to your ipad as well. I like my lowrance hds gen 2 setup. It is very...

    Oars on a Cruiser

A canoe paddle came with my boat (so did a kicker). Trying to use it was comical. You can turn the boat a little, but in any wind it just does what it wants. I don't imagine oars would be a ton better, but certainly would offer more control and power.

    Bought a new windlass recently?

Thats as much rode as I have, but I can't really get it to hold in much more than 400' with any current. I'm not anchoring for anything but late season halibut at those depths, and I'm always on lookout, so if I drag, or don't hold I can deal with it. I wouldn't go to sleep like that. I...

    Honda 90

There should be a flat plastic cover maybe? Not sure about a 1993, but other carbureted bf 90s have a little cover. I don't think you need to have it on.

takes a licking and keeps on cruising

Oh man. I'd better go edit that wikipedia page!! :D I don't think anyone is doubting that it can/does happen. I just don't see it as something that "will" happen. I've shot a few rounds into the water. The bullets go into the water. Yup. Lots of scary things can happen to bullets once...

    Bought a new windlass recently?

I use an anchor release technique. In a nutshell, I have a ring spliced on the end of my rode, I have a ring on my rode that gets a buoy on it, and a short tag line on the ring on the end. I run a line from my bow cleat, down through my bow eye (do this at the dock!!!) and then back to my...
