    WiFi

I'm an old computer unix guru, retired for 6 years now, but as I recall, the way SSL (Secure Socket Layer), which is the protocol used when you connect to an https site involves public/private encryption keys. A server advertises their public key to the world using a trusted third-party...

    computer virus

I've been retired for 6 years now, which in the software industry means I'm a fossil, but I still don't understand the attraction for Microsnot Windoze. I've never had a virus on any Linux system I've been associated with, but in spite of all the anti-virus/spyware/worm/whatever software one...

    WiFi

vim, an editor commonly found on Linux systems, has an option to encrypt a file you're editing. I use it to store my passwords with an encryption key not written anywhere.

    Forward Hatch Leak

The hatch on my 2004 c-22 Cruiser leaked on me a few years ago, and it turned out to be simply a loose screw on the hinge. One twist with a screwdrive fixed the problem.

Casey's "South Florida Loop" Shift Cable Story....

Casey, I sure hope you stopped at the Rod and Gun Club in Everglades City. No slips, only a side tie-up, but 30-amp power, and one of the prettiest renovated old hotels. It was a highlight of my trip. Photos here: http://smittypaddler.com/cds/cd4/greatl ... ournal.htm

    Using US Army River Charts

I too use the "Upper Mississippi River Navigation Charts" but watch out. Mine, which I bought in 2004, has some incorrect latitude/longitudes. Sorry, I don't recall which pages. The ACOE charts for the Illinois Waterway used to have some bad lat/lons, but they've corrected them.

    GPS Antenna Location

My Garmin GPS antenna works ok mounted under the roof, inside the cabin, and so does the Microsoft USB GPS antenna on my laptop, but my handheld Geko 101 that I have as a battery-operated back won't work unless I go out in the open air.

Our summer Erie Canal cruising plans

When I did the Erie Canal in 2005, there was a 10 mph speed limit most of its length. They phone ahead to the next bridge or lock, telling them when to expect you. If you're early you might get a ticket. I left one of the locks with another big fisherman, who decided to ignore the speed...

    weight

I pull my c22 cruiser with a 6-cylinder Ford Explorer. I've trailered from Wisconsin to Florida and back three times now, with almost no problems. I go through a lot of trailer lights, and keep several spares. The first year the double axles were out of alignment by .75 inches, causing a lot...

    Replacing a Wallas Stove Wick....

I recently met with Casey in Welaka on the St Johns River (hi Casey :-), and I must compliment him on his beautiful new Venture 23. An abundance of room, it seems twice as big as my 22 Cruiser. About the only thing significant he lacks is my ac/dc refrigerator, which I really appreciate, and of...

    Bottom paint

Definitely yes on anti-fouling bottom paint. On my loop I had it, and the only place I got barnacles was on the part of the motor-mount that was underwater. I've heard there's some sort of grease you can apply on metal parts to fend off barnacles. I'd use it if I were doing a do-over.

bought a new boat today & sorry to say it's not a c-d

The rack is constructed of wood, assembled with nuts and bolts and guy wires. It's disassembled right now; the boat is on its trailer, and I'm in a cottage at Acosta Creek Harbor. I become a live-aboard again on the 1st of March and I'll be reassembling it then. I'll take step-by-step photos...

bought a new boat today & sorry to say it's not a c-d

Sorry about that; I keep a copy of my online website on my computer, and I posted a link to that. Here's the online link: http://smittypaddler.com/cds/cdn/fl10/d100126.htm

bought a new boat today & sorry to say it's not a c-d

I love to paddle, and have more boats than I care to count. I recently built a rack for my C22 Cruiser that works pretty well. Photo here: http://localhost/~smitty/links/smittypa ... 100126.htm There's room up there for another boat, but first time out, I decided to just go with one. It's...

    New DC TV/DVD @Fisheries

I use a Triax UFO Antenna on Na Waqa, and it works well with the digital converter box. Here's a link: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... 3&id=69511

    New DC TV/DVD @Fisheries

I have one of the combination tv/dvd/cd/am/fm-radio, bought in 2004, and the tv is analog. I use a digital stream converter box, and it works great. There's a photo here: http://smittypaddler.com/cds/cd7/fl08/p ... G_0218.JPG

    replacement prop

I use piranha propellers (http://www.piranha.com/) on my Honda 40's and like them. They increase my top-end by about a knot, increase my gas mileage by .5 mpg, and If I hit something, the blades shatter rather than transmit the energy into my drive train, and each blade is individually...

    Google Earth

Most chartplotting software lets you enter waypoints. Fugawi, for instance, is software I've used that let's you enter waypoints, along with descriptive information like phone numbers, text descriptions of marinas, etc. I've used GoogleEarth to help calibrate rasterized charts, identify rest...

    St Johns Christmas 09

The first year, 2008, I put in at Monroe Harbor, and left my boat and trailer there in the public parking lot. When I got back after a week my car and trailer were untouched, and the canoe I had on the roofrack was also safe. In 2009 I put in at Welaka and left my boat and trailer at Welaka...

    St Johns Christmas 09

I'm trailering from Wisconsin to the St Johns for the third year in a row, starting Friday, January 22, weather permitting. I'm always hesitant to say just how much I love the St Johns, for fear I'll help get it commercialized like other parts of Florida. It's still mostly pristine, with more...
