Another c-brat on the St Johns

Several people have recommended Spring Garden Creek and Ponce De Leon Springs to me, but in 5 years of coming down here every winter I have yet to try it. I just checked chart 11498-a, and though access to it through Lake Woodruff is shallow, there seems to be enough water for our C-Dorys. It's...

Would you buy agin or go another way ?

The CD-22 Cruiser is just about perfect for me. If life's circumstances were different and my wife liked to boat, I'd get a bigger CD, but I travel alone, and live comfortably on my CD-22 for months at a time, easily pulling it down the road with a 6-cylinder Ford Explorer. In the summer I...

    St.Johns River, Florida

I think you went up Bear Creek instead of the main channel of the Oklawaha. Bear Creek is really a side channel, and meets the main Oklawaha a few miles upriver from the St Johns where your photo was taken, I think. Here's a link to my photo at the same spot...

    St.Johns River, Florida

I didn't have a good experience with Jacksonville's Transit System. I waited at a bus stop on the outskirts of town for nearly an hour, only to see the bus go by without stopping. Contrast this with Honolulu, where a typical wait is 15 minutes, The Bus will haul your bicycle for you, and an...

    St.Johns River, Florida

I love cruising on the St Johns. If you stop at Hontoon Island State Park say hello to Glen and Buzz. I'll be at Tropical Resort & Marina on Lake Beresford from mid-January thru February on my C-Dory, so stop and say hello. If you get to Acosta Creek Harbor just north of Welaka say hi to Jay...

    alcohol stove

I've disovered using pure alcohol causes the bottoms of my pots to blacken, which doesn't occur if you add a little water to the alcohol. Or better yet, use 180-proof rum. It's cheaper, too. :-)

    Ground Fault Interupter outlets

Every once in awhile I'll stay at a marina where only 15-amp current is available from a GFCI socket, and I always have trouble with the GFCI being tripped. Sometimes I've been able to get it to work by turning everything off in the boat, then turning on the main switch to shore power, and if...

    anchoring advice

I second the advice about not using a stern anchor and not throwing the anchor, and using a 7:1 on the rode. Both anchors off the bow, if you need two. I keep a just-in-case Fortress anchor mounted at the bow, but when I anchor overnight I use a Delta Plow instead...

How big a propeller ding does it take to affect performance?

I use Piranha propellers, and recently noticed that engine would sometimes cavitate when quartering waves 2 to 3 feet in height. I found a chip in the edge of one blade, about a half-inch long by a quarter inch deep. In five minutes I had that one blade replaced, and had a propeller like new...

    I Love Honda Outboards

I have 1300 hours on my twin Honda 40 outboards, purchased in 2004. The only repair in all that time was to replace a stuck thermostat. Since I did the Great Loop in 2004/2005, they mostly have been used for waterskiing, with a few 200 mile trips on the Mississippi, St Johns River in Florida...

pass through between cockpit and cabin

When I went up the Lostman's River in Everglades National Park, I anchored several hundred yards from shore, out in the middle of Second Bay. I got eaten alive by mosquitos, and since I had all the screens closed, and a towel draped over the bilge pump hole, I couldn't understand why, until...

Apostle Islands (area) Gathering? Why not?

I've cruised the Apostles via sailboat, kayak, and my 22-Cruiser. It's a great place. Bayfield itself is a wonderful community with great restaurants and shops. The Chautauqua Big Top is only a few miles away, and they used to have a free shuttle from Bayfield; don't know whether they still...

wtf is up with this 30 min post edit limit? I need at least

Of the forums I'm the member of, I think the format of this one is the best there is, and the people are almost always courteous and friendly. But in the case of the author of this thread, not!

Focus on waypoint with Garmin 78sc

I use it mostly for planning, developing routes, etc., before I leave home. Say I'm sitting in Wisconsin on a cold snowy evening, and I'd like to look at the best routes in and out of Chokoloskee Bay down in Florida. I have a waypoint for that location, so I can quickly focus on there on the...

Focus on waypoint with Garmin 78sc

That almost works. When I've selected the waypoint, then selected Map, it shows me the waypoint centered on the proper map, but the only option when I then press enter is GO, which returns the map so my current location is centered, with navigation to the selected waypoint turned on, and a line...

Focus on waypoint with Garmin 78sc

I recently bought a Garmin GPSMAP 78SC, and I'm learning how to use it. I have two questions so far: 1. The chart plotter software I use on my laptop has a feature that lets me focus on a particular waypoint, e.g. I click on "Focus on Waypoint," click on "Everglades Challenge Start," and...
