The Challenge of Buying A Used C-Dory

Eric, when I was looking two years ago the national Craigslist search tools were a big help. Other internet listings occasionally came through too. In about eight months I was able to find 6 boats in the $25,000-$35,000 range and visit several of them in person. By the time I found the one I...

    Odd thing happened this morning?

Yes. It really wasn't hard after I got organized. Lots of folks have put hatches in the v-berths to get storage but any water will always run down to the lowest point anyway. The deck port does a good job. Be sure to look for leaks in your front cabin too. Couldn't believe how many I had.

    Drilling Holes in Transom

As you probably know, some people use a "Mini Jacker" to raise the kicker a few inches. Test-fitted one on my boat but wasn't happy with it and ordered a Garelick movable offshore bracket, which has arrived but hasn't been installed. When mounting a swim step I overdrilled and filled the holes...

    Odd thing happened this morning?

Also, I found water sitting in the bottom of the anchor locker because the drain hole had been drilled about 1 inch higher than the bottom of the well. Of course it could freeze there in the winter and do more damage. In my boat it was possible to remove the little chrome splash cover outside...

    Odd thing happened this morning?

Water appeared at the same spot in the '07 CD22 I bought last year. The plug itself was to fill one of the holes where the factory injected foamed-in-place flotation. Removing the plug showed the subfloor area filled with water on my boat, as on yours. After sucking and sponging as much as...

Opinions on outfitting a 23" C-dory for the NorthWest

If the boat doesn't have one you should certainly put a marine compass at the top of your list (why do they sell C-Dorys without one?). After that a DSC equipped VHF radio, maybe with built in GPS for simplicity, should be a top priority too (get your boat an MMSI number and program it in on...

We've been ordering some meal kits from one of the online fix-it-yourself services (Hello Fresh in our case but there are others). They come packed with frozen gel packs that do a great job -- unless it sits unnoticed on the porch for a couple of days (don't ask how we know that). Anyhow, the...

Selling a C-Dory Regionally vs. Locally: Differences

Last year I sold a sailboat (a West Wight Potter 15) and bought a C-Dory. In each case the very active online owners' group was a great advantage and resource. The owners' groups helped me advertise, look at what was on the market, learn what questions to ask and decide what features were...

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

Brent and Bob, you were both close. It was in the binnacle control and in the neutral switch circuit there, and it was a "factory crimp type" problem. And yes, it was one of those that could drive you to drink.... Anyhow it is running again and ready to go into the water for only the 4th or 5th...

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

FOUND IT! My electrician friend and fellow C-Dory owner Bob came over this morning and spent about two hours following wires around. Bob doesn't hesitate to follow colored wires from here to there, use test leads to pierce insulation and test for power, etc. The problem was a broken wire in the...

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

OK. My friend here has also uncovered the test procedures for the two neutral switches and testing the starter relay on a bench, and I can do those as well. I'll keep you posted.

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

Would battery to the starter relay be the same as battery to the small lead on the pull-in coil? I can easily do that. If I hear something happening, I'll conclude that the pull-in coil works. After doing that, should the whole ignition circuit be energized (key on)? I'm thinking that having...

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

Whoops. The problem with my reasoning is that I already swapped the starter relay and the ECM relay way back in an earlier test (they're identical) and nothing changed. That implies the starter relay is really OK. Talked with an electrician friend and C-Dory owner who points out that the...

    Fuel not getting to motor

Outrigger, I had the same no-fuel problem on my 2006 Suzuki 90. After all other parts had been replaced it turned out that the fuel pickup tubes inside both tanks had shattered from age. This meant removing the pickups from both tanks while still in the boat (had to do that to get clearance to...

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

Bob, I made up a test lead and sure enough, when the key is turned to Start there is still no 12 v power to the small side terminal on the Bendix. That should be the pull-in coil. Check my reasoning here: If I read the wiring diagram right, this could point to the starter relay, the key switch...

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

Thanks again, team. I'm going to check the starter relay / Bendix gear possibility next. Since the motor ran fine right up until it didn't, that sounds like a candidate. I changed the starter and Bendix on a lawn tractor last year and it was simple. Not sure if it's as easy on the Suzuki, where...

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

Thanks for the tips. The latest- 1 - Charged both batteries (both are 1 year old, a 625 AH and a 670 AH) with the car-type charger. 2 - Cleaned and refreshed all batter connections. 3 - Double checked all fuses. 4 - Bypassed the engine kill switch with a jumper. (A friend had to replace his...

    Suzuki 90 Won't Start

My 2006 Suzuki 90 (very low hours) worked fine until suddenly, on Sunday, turning the key to the Start position got no response. Key in the "On" position gets the warning tone and the 4 red diagnostic lights on the gauge to light; going past that to "Start" does nothing (though I hear the fuel...

    C Brats YouTube Channel

Yes, a YouTube channel, a Facebook page and a Group MMSI are all useful 21st century ideas. In fact if we don't do them, we'll show ourselves to be more and more out of step with the world. (I know, maybe you like that idea....) Sure, it's generational. I sympathize ... a little. I'm 70 myself...
