    Installing Hand-Holds on Windshield Visor

I would like to install 2 hand-holds on the visor forward of the L + R windshields, similar to the factory ones in the cockpit. These would only be intended to aid my balance as I move to/from the bow along the gunwale, and not for fenders or any loads. If you have done this mod, could you...

Backing plate for Lewmar pivoting bow roller?

Clay - Thank you for your offer. I may also be doing some other mods, and I have on hand some materials for backing. I don't have epoxy or filler, but I will order some to ensure I have enough. I'm not sure exactly what to order. I will be using 3/8" bolts to mount the roller. What is the...

Backing plate for Lewmar pivoting bow roller?

Bob Austin implied there is balsa core in the mounting area. Would Bob or Barry please comment about the balsa core?

Backing plate for Lewmar pivoting bow roller?

Thank you for the excellent suggestions, which I will follow. My wife and boated and anchored on the Mississippi for 17 years, and we have now logged more than 500 miles on the Columbia. Since having the windlass installed, I have enjoyed anchoring 4 times, in the full current, with headwinds...

Backing plate for Lewmar pivoting bow roller?

My new pivoting bow roller (Lewmar 66840007) will arrive next week. I will be installing it myself. Other than using large washers below the deck, is it advisable to use some form of backing plate to reinforce the deck? Zenith has a Maxwell HR6 windlass, and a 5 kg Bruce anchor.

Have you been to Martin Slough (Kalama WA) recently?

Howdy Ken and Harvey, Thanks for the info. I will set sail for there some day. I have gotten Zenith wet many times this year, but I’m holding off until the winds on the Columbia die down a bit. The boat will take it, but 50 miles against 2 foot chop makes for a long day. I finally anchored...

Have you been to Martin Slough (Kalama WA) recently?

I often pass Martin Slough on the interstate and see boats anchored there. I have been tempted to take our boat there, but the path from the main channel to the enclosed bay looks to be shallow and filled with obstacles. Have you been to the slough recently? Any tips about the best path...

    COVID-19 need to laugh?

Ken and all, I just posted on the Cathlamet event thread. There were sufficient concerns raised which led to its cancellation for now. Still looking forward to meeting you someday.

Mike - good thoughts, and a good reason to cancel for now. Karen and I were thinking the same thing about unwelcomed guests. We cannot suggest a new date, as nobody knows how long this thing will last. I will call the marina tomorrow. I'm sure they were looking forward to the income. Over...

As a first-time C-Brat Cruise Director, I am excited about the number of folks who are planning to attend the event. However, this virus thing has cast a dark shadow over the world, and it will get worse before it gets better. Like many of you, Karen and I are defined as “endangered species”...

Rick, Welcome aboard the Cathlamet Special. Karen and I are planning a 10 am departure from the Kalama ramp. It’s about 42 river miles from there to Cathlamet. I will send you my cell # via PM. Perhaps we can meet along the way. Other Dory’s may also be on that section of the river during...

Harvey, I enjoy encountering ships on the river. Sometimes the channel can be very narrow, and one must decide which side of him you will pass on. For their size, the big ships leave relatively low wakes, at the low speed in the channel, but they still can leave behind a series of 4’ waves...

Ahoy, Fellow Brats. Karen and I drove to Cathlamet to check on some details. Here is some info you will need. 1. There are some large fishing boats on E dock, which was reserved for us, and they may or may not be there for our weekend. Therefore, we have been moved to F dock. This dock is...

We have used the Kalama ramp a few times, and it is our local favorite. Zenith floats off and onto the trailer easily, wihout having to back the rig way into the water. Walking the boat to the adjacent fuel pump is a cinch. Real cleats on the deck. I don't believe there is a washdown at the...

Trailer brakes in salt water service

My rig is in the shop having a new tongue coupler, drums, bearings, and axles installed. I’m also having disk brakes put in. I will also have the rims checked for true-ness, and get the fairly-new tires balanced The coupler has an electric lockout, tied to my 7-pin truck connector. After...

This event is really shaping up! There are now 8 boats, and 1 RV, planning to attend. The 30-amp power outlets on E dock are grouped in 4’s on poles. I will not need power, so I will moor at the north end where there is no power. Jason – There will be a wide variety of Dory’s for you to...
