    Towing for Mileage

Define what a heavy load is. The 7.3 L International V8 is a brute. John

    Towing for Mileage

My experience towing the 22' C-Dory was with an F150 4.6 L with 4wd and a super duty F250 Supercab, 7.3 L with 8' box and 4wd. The 4.6 L was simply too underpowered for long stretches with any real elevation changes. I estimate I put 7,000 miles towing before trading up. Mileage was around 10...

    QL trim system

Joe mentioned lengthing the hull in effect with standard tabs, and I believe that is a valid point. My sense is that tabs take up some of the shock when going into chop, not just the bow. Another feature that tabs have when fully extended at slow speeds is to reduce hull speed ever so slightly...

    Boat for Lake superior

Yes, trim tabs are a necessity, particularly if your boat needs adjustments due to uneven weight distribution, passenger shifting, etc. The C-Dory responds quickly to tabs when on plane. John

    Forward hatch

No sense walking on the hatch if it can be skirted safely. Much depends on construction of shoe bottom since a wide sole will distribute weight better. I usually place a throw cushion on the hatch before sitting on it. John

Doug & Betty - we are still kicking but nearly freezing to death this winter. Happy birthday. John & Edna

    Lying a-hull in a 16 Cruiser

Interesting thread. Dr. Bob with his trans oceanic sailing experience certainly has a better handle on sea worthy crafts than most of us including me. I've done some short trips on the ocean with sail boats and LSTs and two long trips on the Pacific from San Diego to Korea and back. On both...

    New C-dorys built?

My comments probably have little relevance in this thread. I can under stand a dealer's pique when people inform themselves of opinions from others and then become hesitant about this or that when buying a boat This site has thrived for years now because of its democratic nature, and by its...

    Transom Cap Issue

Mike - I have not had problems with the cap on two 22's I have had. And since I never inspected how they built the transom, always assumed that marine grade plywood was used or end grain balsa, all encased in plenty of fiberglass. Someone on this site has the facts and should share it. Does...

    Is it spring yet?

One night in Montana 50 years ago, it was projected to get to - 30 below. I had just purchased a mummy bag from Eddie Bauer ( when that outfit sold real outdoor clothes instead of all the stylish stuff today), The bag was rated for - 30, so I decided to pitch my small tent in the back yard in...

    Is it spring yet?

Kevin and I are probably going to compete for bragging rights on Montana cold nights. He is in Bozeman and I in White Suffering Springs, both towns at over 5,000 feet. Only WSS has more wind. The coldest weather I was actually out in was - 47 F. Right now it is a balmy 10 below F and a low...

    Questions for canvas maker

Lucky Boy - My comments will only have relevance if your area in the winter experiences high winds from time to time. A full Sunbrella custom cover will show chafe after a season of winter wind in Montana. Wind may not be a problem where you live. I have evolved to another system here. A...

    Freeze damage

Brent - I'm curious about you putting anti-freeze in your water tanks (for drinking) over the winter. Can't you syphon enough water out of your tanks and hoses to negate the problems of freezing? I have just the simple foot pump and once the syphon action is completed, there is not enough...

A question about cruising at "Trawler Speed" MPGs

Jim - I thought you lived in the tropical part of Texas, and with the hurricane season prety well ove would be oiut in the gulf. We are experiencing a Chinook wind right now with temperatures in the mid forties. Slush and water everywhere. Thataway. Good to learn of your successful surgery...

    removing the plug...

When I bought my first 22' fourteen years ago, it had a flapper kind of plug in it. I never trusted it with no good reason to support my feelngs. The thing had a split slender duck bill kind of thing protruding past the hull. Does anyone have experience with that kind of plug? John

    Trailering

Staigerb - You were wondering if the cavels (cleats) were strong enough for tie downs. I'll share a story and you can draw your own conclusions. Back in 1997, I decided to go from a 14" to a 15" tire (single axle trailer) and went to the factory in Kent for the exchange. This is what...

beat this! money lost on boats!

When I think of what my wife and I spent on our four children for post secondary education, marriages, and forgiven loans (more than I care to admit) boating costs have been minimal. John

    Full or Empty - Winterization

Matt - I'm no chemist, believe me. But when water and propene are combined, the result is isopropyl alcohol, commonly called rubbing alcohol which comes in 70% and 99% varieties. So introducing ISO into a fuel tank is putting some water into it. I have no way of knowing the chemical...
