1859 San Juan Island "Pig War'

When you read the history of those two camps, the British were living much better than the Americans. A bit of shared history between the two countries, and the only casualty was a pig. Fortunate that cooler heads prevailed.

What other boat is comparable to the dory 25-26?

While all the other boats mentioned are in the size and similar general layout, there really isn't anything that has the C-Dory's combination of accommodations, fuel efficiency (due to hull shape), reasonably light weight, ability to plane at a lower speed and with less horsepower, and...

Are all years of 22 CDs capable of running twin outboards?

I have run commercial boats with single engine diesels, twins, and one with 3 engines. Damage potential exists regardless of the number of engines. Twins are great for low speed maneuvering, but you can expect twice the amount of upkeep and maintenance. When we bought our C-Dory 25, we...

Best boat show to check out C-dory

There may be a photo in the Wild Blue album, or in the Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and Crew thread of our CD-25 (similar cabin to the TomCat) with bikes (strapped to the radar arch) and an 8.5' dinghy on the cabin top. Yes, the C-Dory line looks a bit spartan compared to the Ranger Tugs...

Greetings and Head Question: How important is it?

You answered your own question: go with what your wife thinks. I'm not being a smartass - if you want happy couple's cruising, you need a significant other who is totally onboard (pun intended). There are some folks who are fine with the porta-potty (we have used them over the years), but if...

    SE Alaska 2022 - Family of 5 in 22' C-Dory

Oh, Pat... am I misremembering* you doing Alaska in a week or so? We all travel at our own pace. I remember you doing the Erie Canal and Trent-Severn portion of the loop in just a few days. It took us a couple months for that same stretch, with so much to see and do. One way...

Best boat show to check out C-dory

Finding a C-Dory in stock at a dealer isn't a given. Three Rivers Marine in Florida may have a couple boats in stock, but it would be good to contact them direct. The production of these boats is a fraction of what it used to be in the 2006 to 2009 era, with ownership of the molds and name...

You are making memories of a lifetime for your family! Good on you! Thanks for sharing that here.

25/26 vs 22 in rough waters

If the rear deck on a boat is pooped, you need to move that water now. An 800 gph pump, if everything (including the hose) was at max efficiency, would move about 13 gallons per minute. Not much, not very fast. That said, we had Wild Blue in a lot of conditions during the years, and getting...

Excellent Customer Service, Again and Always

"double duplicite redundancy"... did you get that from the Department of Redundancy Department? It is important to share the good news when you get service like that! I have no doubt this new install will serve you for many years. Enjoy!

    Stuck window

What we found that worked when the windows didn't want to open: push them forward (as when you're closing them), then squeeze in the latch to open. Sounds counter-intuitive, but it seems to break the "seal" from the gunk in the windows. Once you get the window open, clean the track thoroughly...

    Lake Powell Rock Fall

Wow! I thought about that situation when we were there in September one year... still hot, so we spent the night in the shade of a cliff. Amazing that someone caught that with a camera.

No Go zones in the San Juans and Gulf Islands

Trying not to belabor the facts, but my last year of driving commercial whale watch boats, the SRKW were rarely in that "protection zone" along the west side of San Juan Island. And when the timing was right that they were in that area, they were just passing through. I made far more trips to...

No Go zones in the San Juans and Gulf Islands

Five years of driving commercial whale watch boats, just for a reference. "All the salmon" probably means different things to different people (or Orcas): the number of salmon out there is significantly down from years past. The Southern Resident Killer Whales (the salmon eaters) are in a...

    I’m in a Florida state of mind…

With each move we've made in the years we've been married, it seemed we were always looking for what the area we were in didn't have. If you live in the farmlands, you want the mounatins; live in the mountains, you want the beach; live at the beach, you want the dry desert. One thing we...

    05/12 - 05/14 - Friday Harbor C-Brats Get-Together

2013. A fire started in Downriggers Restaurant. The office of the whale watch company we worked for was right underneath the restaurant. The business owner, Joan, and I were the first ones back into the building when the Fire Department allowed it, to retrieve business items. The building...

    Princess Louisa Cruise Help

The trip to Princess Louisa Inlet is spectacular! When we went there, we were working our way to Desolation Sound and not on any schedule. That said, rather than the most efficient, consider what might be the most interesting: if you haven't been through the Gulf Islands, there are some great...

Why does my steering stiffen up at speed?

On most of the boats I've owned, the steering got stiffer with speed. Try trimming the motor up (or down) to find the most efficient fuel burn, and that seemed to give me the most comfortable steering, as well.
