Hatch Screen Velcro Detaches from Window Rim. Ideas?

Agree with srbaum's rec: The only "velcro type" product that worked was 3M brand hook and loop fasteners. I've used this for mounting heavy stuff. Surface prep prior to mounting is critical. A little lacquer thinner to degrease the area, soap and water, rinse, and a light sanding with 220...

Importance of 4x4 or AWD or Locking Diff at boat launch?

I've seen a heavy tow truck gradually slide, slowly and inexorably, down the ramp in Bamfield, BC, stopping as the water reached the floormats, trailer submerged, 25 foot cruiser calmly afloat. The operator tied the boat off to the float, walked the distance to the marine service center and...

First San Juans or Gulf Island trip?

I cut my teeth boating on the Columbia, primarily out of Astoria, with much of my trips between Cathlamet and the Bar. And we have done a few trips in the Gulf Islands and a couple shorter ones in the San Juans. Before that, we sea kayaked for 20 years, several areas on Vancouver Island, both...

Your Thoughts on the 16 ft cruiser

Superb summary, Marco. I think getting a "balanced" load, and minimizing weight are prime factors in making such good use of a spry, efficient platform such as CD-16. Good on ya! PS, ours is a different hull, but also too small for more than two, on multiday ventures, but good weatherproof...

    Propane stove in cabin

Both butane and propane are heavier than air. Both can pool in the bilge. Butane boils at a higher temperature, so that at temps below 32 F, it may be difficult to get a stove or furnace lit.

    New CEO for West Marine

In Astoria, Englund Marine is the sole source for boating needs. It is one of the few family owned marine supply outfits around, with seven retail stores spread along the coast from Eureka to Westport, WA, having a heavy commercial component, dollarwise. Much of their clothing and footwear...

    Keeping the bilge dry....

Foggy speaks big wisdom. I have a severe sensitivity to mold spores, yet we are able to sleep in the small cuddy of our 20 ft Bartender, unaffected, because of aggressive cleaning of the bilge. Ours is a dry sailed boat, stored in a dry boat shed, which also helps a lot.

    First PNW Winter

thechadmiller, Thataway's suggestion of a Slantback style cockpit cover has worked well for us, trailering at freeway speeds. In combination with a dodger, per photo at the link, there is minimal buffeting. The Slantback keeps dirt, birds, etc., while parked, as well. Ours is a custom tailored...

    Fish & Chips

Harvey wrote: Roger, Yes, they are pretty good there too. It is called "BowPickers" I believe. Definitely the best in the Astoria area and maybe all of Oregon. The locals hereabouts like the Bowpicker, also, both for its quality fish, and the amiable and talented owners. However, Enola's...
