Yamaha vs Suzuki

John, love to hear those bagpipes:-)

Micah - man, you must have some serious quads! Those guys that ski to Catalina, nuts, no thanks.

Robert - yeah, 425 in a Dory... might need to add two sponsons in a pickle fork configuration:-) Not sure how this go into a speed discussion... gear heads:-)
The stock speed of a Dory is just fine....:-)

Thataway:-) Ii guess we are extremely lucky or you guys are, I don't own one yet to have a C-Dory. I'm glad someone picked up the molds to continue the build. I have no suggestion as to improvents as I have yet to get on the water. We are part time on Friday Harbor, that may become full time at some point. Taking care of wife's older parents, and we were taking care of my dad, whom just passed. So we are back and fourth right now. I did just sell a SeaRay:-)

I have read about the issues with the Tomcat. To bad there is not the funding to make changes. I really really love the Aspen Cats... but that's in no way in the budget. I love the Targa's and Sargo's as well. But again, my wallet is a little to thin at the moment:-) We want to be able to go out on good weather days and explore the San Juans. And then after experience and time head out further.
The short term will be day trips and 3 days over nighters etc. My experience is all Southern CA when I was younger, on much larger boats than I can afford.

Anywho.... I see your points, all very valid. Thanks for giving us/me so much good info. I hope they keep building C-Dory's.

Take care, I may just off this discussion for a bit. Wife just got home after a couple weeks. Been a nice break:-)

Dumb question but if you are not a C-Dory owner (yet) can you still check out the rendezvous?

Skydog, that speed skiing was a long time ago when I had serious muscles and almost no sense. Also an ex-wife who loved driving fast. Flat as glass only and NEVER make a mistake over 80, I got messed up enough a few times wiping out at 50-60. And don't get me started on crazy motorcycle and Porsche stuff.....

A CD 25 with a great Suzuki 200 seems perfect now!

I wouldn't buy a large outboard engine from any manufacturer that doesn't also manufacture piccolos.

Now that there is funny!

On the other hand, I wouldn't by an outboard from any manufacturer that didn't start out making weaving looms!

I raced motocross for over 30 years.... that was a time ago. Have had major back issues for 18 years. Very long story. But... I recently got my life back in a huge way.

2 months ago I had (2) artifical disc put in my lower back and (2) in my neck.
There went my new C-Dory 25 down payment for the short term. haha

But.. I feel amazing. After much surgery pain. Still slight pain but nothing like before. This was effecting every part of my life, Hence no boating for a long time. We drive a lot in our camper and that has always killed me. By the time we get anywhere I'm wasted.

So far I'm feeling amazing and have had some 6 hour drives already and feeling pretty good. Just started PT.

I have a new lease on life:-) So, time to get it in gear:-)

I know how hard those speed sports can be on a body... good thing we were young but paid a very high costly price. But I'd do it all again in a heart beat:-)

Take care.

Micahbigsur@msn.com,

I've towed a boat down both sides of the Gulf of California and shipped a 36' boat to Mobile Al from San Diego and home again. So, I'm fascinated by having a Ranger Tug, all 29', towed to Mexico from Colorado. And I settled for a 25' boat.

The 20' Ranger Tug has a length of 33 ft, beam of 10', and a dry weight of 11,000 lbs.

I'm interested if he towed the darn thing or had it shipped. If he towed it, what did he use, a Kenworth? Please answer ASAP cause, if he trailered it, I'm gonna order one.

Boris

Hope you get yours too. If this market keeps going down we have a problem...aaarrrgggg.

We'd like to be in position to order by end of this year to be ready for next year.
Been talking to some other C-Dory's brats and got to thinking maybe starting with a 22 but we'll see how this year pans out. I AM BOATING NEXT YEAR:-)

We are booking a charter soon with Desolation Yacht Charters and actually hiring captain so we can combine a charter with a few days of training etc... then cut him loose and go alone if it all works out. They have a 25 in their fleet.

Doo you have a Dory now? What's your dream C-Dory?

Take care,

Boris, the 29' Ranger Tug was towed with a 1 ton Dodge like mine, not a dually. BUT he said he didn't get the necessary state by state Required wide load permits that can be a real hassle. If you get in a wreck without them your insurance company won't cover you or your liable damage and you could lose everything. That is why we didn't get the 26 Nordic Tug we wanted at first and got our Ranger Tug 25 which has an 8'6" no permits needed beam.

Hi Mica, PM or email any time with back questions. kirkart1@icloud.com
I can send you pics of the devices in my back and neck.
My doctor is Dr. Todd Lanman. We had to go to southern California for the surgery, Beverly Hills ever. At Cedars. He was also doing Eddie VanHelen's back at the same time. yes, at the same time.... I can explain that later:-)

Pain for over 18 years. At the end of my rope. Literally. Didn't want to live with this much pain any longer. This was my hail marry and and expensive one.

Used the money we had saved for the boat down payment for this surgery since Dr. Lanman is a specialist and out of network with Blue Shield PPO. Cost a pretty penny since we did back and neck.

But.... I'm about 10 weeks out now and I feel amazing. I still have a little pain especially now that I have started PT. But oh man... I am a new person. I literally can't believe it. I used to wake up just hating life... now, I pop out of bed ready to go and feel rested and go to go. I'm happy again.

Anyway... if anyone out there is suffering and has had or thinking of having spinal fusion DO NOT DO IT. Fusion is the worse possible thing you can do to you back or neck in in MOST cases is not the right thing to do. Dr. Lanman actually performs spinal fusion reversal surgery as well.

Looks his up, there is tons of information on him online. He is one of the top neurosurgeons in the world. Super nice guy. Although the Beverly Hills thing is a bit much for us:-)

Don't live in pain. Take care,
Kirk

Hi Boris, We've been on lots of Rangers, they are really nice vessels for sure. Much fancier than a C-Dory but I believe a little more work and up keep. We really like the 29 as well.

But man... that would be a lot to tow. Maybe if once a year better off just having it done through a towing service.

I'd like to try out the new 25, looks good.

We are really leaning towards a 23 venture but time will tell. There's the boats you want and the boats you can maybe afford. My dream boat would be a Targa 27.2 or Sargo 28 aft door or Aspen's new outboard Cat. But man... all those boats tripe or more the costs of a C-Dory, depending on model.

We are part time Friday Harbor so just really want something for when we are there. Mostly day trips with aspirations of overnighters, Canada and Alaska.
Doing everything we can to be boating 2021 season. I just had a major surgery that was half the cost of a C-Dory and my daughter decided to get married this year... aaarrrrggggggg:-)

If this post is still about Yamaha VS Suzuki...

Just went through a re-power of my CD22: a brand new Yamaha F115 installed on my CD22 here in CO.

Will be going through the break in period in the next couple of days and will post on the performance of the Yamaha F115 here at 6,000 ft elevation on a 22 (as compared to the previous motor: 2006 Honda BF90).

Should be educational.

Yeah, we got a bit off topic didn't we...?

It was originaly about 4 stroke and 2 stroke.

Keep us posted on your reposer and your new Yami:-)
Should be a perfect combo but be interesting to hear your experience.

:-)

Skydog, thanks for the back info.
As for favorite C-dory we came from a big sailboat to a 25 Ranger Tug so we don't know the smaller C-dorys but compared to the extra towing weight, trailer length, deeper draft at launch and basic simplicity we like our older 25 CD as I am a fixer upper type and the California tax was a killer on the very expensive Tug that we had to make payments on. Even with virtually everything on the boat replaced it is still way less expensive. Sportcraft in Oregon gave us a great deal on the new Suzuki's. We spend months on the boat so Dana likes having a head, we are enjoying the same anchorages down in Baja as the big Nordhavens with a both a livable and easily towable boat.
Good luck on your boat quest.

Back to the original thred, we have a question about reprogramming our C-10 Suzuki smart guage. We checked out authorized dealers in La Paz and found one a block and a half away. Suzuki seems to have become the dominant brand checking transoms down here. The big 100 footer next to us, Mexican owned, just got a new center console for a tender with a beautiful new Suzuki 300 on it. I just hope we get a dealer on Monterey bay soon, the closest now is 2 hours drive up to the bay area. Sportcraft Marina where we bought the motors is 2 days drive north! They still answer our questions which is great. Our heavy 25 covered the trip down to La Paz with our 200 in 6+ hours straight at 24 mph, our old sailor friends can't believe it. On the way back north to Puerto Escondido we will stop at every anchorage and it will take a couple weeks.

Hi Kirk, I have a photo album "Sierra's Baja Adventure " that comes up over on the left side of the home page, I have added more captions to the photos than seems common in order to document Baja, towns, anchorages, Sierra, the watermaker and the Suzuki.
Thanks for the link to the guage.

Micah, the "extra" documentation is appreciated, and very useful in following along on your adventure.
