Worlds Biggest Diesel Engine

wow, that's a fine engine but it's a two stroke so you wouldn't be able to use it on many lakes, that and it develops it's rated power at only 102 rpm leads me to think that I'll stick with my Hondas :)

Holy Freakin' Frackin' Guacamole - that's the mutha of all engines. I love the steps by each crank throw that lead down into the crankcase - unbelievably impressive (at 50% thermal efficiency).

Yeah, I've been to the Emma Maersk site several times in the past. If I recall, the cabin caught fire in a port somewhere when I was perusing pictures of world's largest container vessels.

You put another couple dozen of these ships in the bathtub and my front porch will be surfside from the water displacement!

At about 1300 feet length at waterline, her hull speed would be on the order of 48.67 knots, figured at 1.35 times the square root of the waterline length in feet. If you look at a silhouette view, you will see that the Emma Maersk has an extremely large bulb keel that protrudes slightly further forward than her bow. See:

http://www.emma-maersk.com/specification/

Even at a fuel saving 1.1 times the square root of the length at waterline, this would still give her a hull speed of slightly less than 40 knots.

Thanks for bringing up both the motor and the ship. I am enough of a gearhead to find stuff like this very interesting.

Regards,

With the price of diesel they should have designed it run on regular gasoline, but wouldn't want to be around when she spits out a 160 gal backfire!
Would also be chore changing out a fowled spark plug, nix that idea.
What a beast!

From the looks of the C Dory 29 ( the Baby Huey boat) maybe they had this engine in mind when they were at the drawing board!

Warren,

If you look at the photo where the crank is laying in the block, there is a pretty healthy electric motor in the lower left near the flywheel. Hard telling if it would turn that monster over. Perhaps they have a compression release to allow it to spin over "freely". The internal friction must be amazing. The whole thing is amazing! Being an old gear head, I love stuff like this!

I wonder what kind of starter it takes to spin that sucker?

If you go here, at the bottom of the page is a link Starting the Wartsila – Video
I’m not able to make it play perhaps someone else can; dang government computer.
Its a cool site...

Jay,
Thanks man! There are like 8-9 videos of that beast on that page. The additional videos are nested inside the main video. Awesome.
