Winter Projects

Let's hear about winter projects, Here are Carpy's

Motors:
I staretd about a month age with routine maintenence, new plugs, lube, filters etc. A new impeller in one motor the other water pump needed a full rebuild. After consulting with Colobear and Hunky Dory this summer (they have the same twin 40's as Carpy) I decideed to add permatrims. Trimming the motors did pretty much nothing and I ran with them almost all the way down all the time. Almost the same with the trim tabs. I'm hoping the PTs will give me more control. The lower units were looking pretty grubby so I cleaned them up and painted them. They look sharp now! This much is done.

Elecrtical:
This is the biggie for this year. I am adding a battery monitor (victron BMV 602) and a substantial rewiring of Carpy. The old wiring was kind of a mess and, most importantly, a mystery to me. It had lots of non-tinned wire and automotive fittings. By rewiring the boat I will know how everything is wired and with the Battery Monitor, be able see how it all works and know what the hell is going on. I have all the parts now and will dive in to this when the New Year's madness has subsided. I have been thinking of adding a solar charger, but I want a season with the Battery Monitor to see what's really going on.

Windlass.
I bought a Lewmar 700V anchor windlass. The new ones come with a relay solenoid. This required a new self launching bow roller, and a new chain and rode, and another wiring order from Greg's Marine Wire. Mo money, mo money, mo money. Hey we all know the definition of a boat, eh? I went with the 8 plait rode. I hope it works as well as they claim. We are looking forward to less arm and back strain and fewer trips to the bow.

Autopilot.
I'm trying to get the bugs out of my Raymarine Autopilot. The computer is off with Ray for testing now. The postion sensor seems to be allright. I am going to relocate the fluxgate. It's a great device when it working.

Kayak:
There has been much talk about Kayaks recently. After 2 years we have found that our kayaking styles are not very compatable and we need to be in the same boat. Tandem kayaks are big and heavy, so we have gone with an inflatable. We bought a Sea Eagle. We haven't had it in the water yet, but it looks good in the house and only weighs 35#. I'm not sure if we can inflate it on the boat. We will be testing it in Florida in Feb. We are heading back to the St. Johns River in Feb. and are looking forward to having no schedule and just letting it happen for a month or more. We will probably get back to the Suwanee and Apilchicola too.

We have lots of ideas for next year, but no firm plans yet.
I'm interested in y'alls winter projects and cruising plans for next season.

Let's hear about winter projects...
This ought to be a fun thread. Good idea!

**************
I've got a bunch of projects going -- at the moment the ones I'm concentrating on are these:

1) Protecting the core (isn't it amazing how much work can be represented by those three little words? :cry).

Some areas I've done already:

- Holes in cabin "floor" where cabinetry angles, water hose clamps, and carpet snaps (!) were attached.

- Fuel fills/rod holders/water fill

- Kicker attachment holes

- Swim-step attachment holes/ladder attachment holes

- Holes where bilge pump hose and wiring were attached to transom

- Bilge pump fastener holes

- Transducer holes

- Fuel tank cleat and footman loop holes

- Battery tray holes and edges

- Lazarette edges and fastener holes

- Stern cleat fastener holes

- Anchor roller mounting holes (old and new)

- Bimini bracket holes

Yet to do are the two transom drains (ugh, but I'm halfway through them now). Oh and there are other cleats, but I may save those for later. At some point I'd like to remove the main engine and get those holes too. And I'm sure there are a few more, like the deck pipe and....

2) Install trim tabs

3) New water hoses/clamps/tank support/view window

4) Mount new fuel tanks with new fuel hoses and clamps

5) New fuel/water separator

6) Install two new bilge pumps/hoses/clamps

7) New through-hulls/hoses/clamps

8 ) Nine million other details :crook

I'm putting in a Victron BMV600 as part of my overhaul of the batteries/switches/etc. (I'm just going to monitor my house bank and not also the starting battery, so that's why the 600 vs. the 602). I have everything in but the gauge face, and so far it's been a pleasure to install compared to some other versions. I haven't decided where to mount the gauge face yet; do you know where you going to put yours?

Sunbeam :hot

I'm putting the Victron on the dash bulkhead to the left of the helm. Its where I have had the trim tab control which I have moved just below it.
I wanted it more visible from the helm seat. I'm putting the windlass switch on the upper right where the 12V cigerette lighter was. I can see the anchor well while working it and can reach it through the window if neeeded. I haven't drilled a hole for it yet but it will be lower on the starboard side. I use it alot for charging stuff.

Thanks. (Which reminds me I'll have to decide where to put the trim-tab control too :o) I thought about putting the Victron gauge on the face of the lower galley cabinet, since that's probably something I'll want to pay attention to more in anchored/living-room mode vs. underway; but then there is a certain tidiness to having all the gauges in one place. Perhaps your location is a good mix of the two, since with it to port of the helm it would also be easily visible from the dinette.

At the end of the season I took the boat up to Carl and Les at EQ and had the annual engine work done. Also, I replaced the cockpit drains with one piece units.

So far this winter I have:
1) Rebuilt the electronic shelf (as detailed here).
2) Installed two fans to keep the front windows clear

3) Installed a holder for a Maglite flashlight

FlashlightHolder1.jpg

4) Rebuilt the cutting board that sits over my Wallas stove (the legs are now through bolted as opposed to how the previous owner attached them).

5) Worked on getting some ventilation under the berth (as detailed in another thread) - almost done with this.

To be done:

6) I'm working on making some magnetic holders for my knifes and some utensils. I bought a few test magnets that will work out nicely, I just need to order a few more and mount them to boards to be glued up to the aft side of the window above the galley.

7) I need to find/build a cup holder to go on the back side of the right hand cabinet door.

8) I need to install a few coat hooks on the door inside the head.

9) I need to install a gear hammock in the berth area.

10) I've got to figure out what rod holders I'm going to install on the back of the roof outside of the hand rails and how I'll do that. I know I can easily fit 4 additional holders up there and maybe can fit 6.

11) I also have a few rail projects I'm working on but I probably won't get to those until spring.

12) In Feb. I'm taking the boat to get it bottom painted and to get a few gel coat nicks repaired.

Been puttering on a few things; Took out all the rode, reversed the anchor line, new rope to chain splice new long splice at the 200' point to give me 300' of anchor line, building a door to the anchor locker to seal that a little bit, repaired two rock kisses on the port chine (from Lake Powell) and some minor scratches from beachings, working on getting the c-80/std horizon vhf interface correct (I lost the lat/long data on the vhf), new fuel water separator, cleaned off oxidization on lower unit of one motor, new gaskets on lazarette hatches, still not a good seal, new covers are in the future, as are new impellers, oil filters and spark plugs.

My Stingray came with one of the 1100gph Rule auto pumps that come on every 2.5 minutes. It has been annoying the crap out of me for 2 seasons now. I usually pull the fuse at night, or when its on the trailer.

I have a new Rule 1500gph pump with the good old float switch that I hope to get installed before next season. I will hook it up per norm and rewire the original pump to the battery switch so it will be powered while under way but off at night.

Last year I had the V700 installed in my 22 and also used 8 plait rode, this worked very well. I did as Dr Bob suggested and soaked the rode for a couple of days before installing it. Used it in the Sacramento Delta and San Juans several times before I sold the boat.
