Windshield Wiper Motor

My starboard wiper motor is not working. There is power to the connections so, unless anyone has any other ideas, I am assuming that the motor is burned out.

The motor is the one that came standard with our 2005 CD22. Looking at the internet I believe the one is this-

Anyone know of a less expensive alternative (other than manual)? Did it fit the mounting holes?

I guess I may find this out if I buy the Marinco AFI 1000, maybe, but the one I have swings the wiper blade 110 degrees. The starboard motor is mounted upside down from the port one. Is this reversed mounting accounted for by something internal in the motor casing?

Thanks

I have one electric and one manual, so I was looking at the electric (AFI/Marinco brand) and was amazed at the high price. There seems to be a premium on anything "marine," plus the C Dory originals are "waterproof." That makes some sense for many boats where water could splash on the motor. Not too much chance of that on a C Dory.

I don't know about exact fit (that would be the time consuming research), but there are lots of less expensive alternatives, some as cheap as $25. Here's one that I looked at.

You can get that AFI motor at Jamestown Distributors for $160. Be sure to get the right shaft length - it is easy to open the motor up and switch it from 80º to 110º and to get it to park to the right or left.

I have replaced three of them, and all three just up and quit. Most of the insides of that AFI motor are plastic... if anything shears, they are toast. Replacing the motor is the easy part - getting the wiper assembly off the shaft is the challenge. Even with greasing the replacement shaft, it had still seized to the wiper socket. A cutting wheel on a Dremel (with some gritting and swearing) will get through that shaft.

Before spending money replacing it I would check the brushes. After sitting for a few years not being used the motor on my Campion did not work. Turns out that moisture/corrosion from sitting caused the brushes to loose contact with the armature. Cleaned it up - made sure the brushes were moving back & forth freely - put it back together and it was fine. The brushes could also be wore down but it is not a big job to replace them - if you can find new ones.

We just replaced ours last month with the original parts. Was definitely expensive, but now that its on, we are glad to have the wiper functioning properly.

At first, it became very slow so we had it cleaned out and lubed. This gave the motor another 5 months of service until it finally died.

PM me if you have any questions.
