Robbin and I were able to get out on the boat for a few days last week. We tied up to a mooring buoy in the late morning in Fossin Bay last Tuesday for a few days. The marine weather was for small craft early evening but we thought we were tucked away for the night no matter what happened.
Well around 18:30 the wind came up from the NE. I would guess it was gusting over 40 Knots. The first thing that tipped me off that something was not quite right was the blast of boat horns. When I looked up the bay was full of boats moving around the bay trying first not to hit each other when their anchors started dragging and second trying to reset their anchors.
This continued all the way to dusk. I would say about half the boats left the bay after a half hour to look for better anchorage but a few continued for almost three hours trying to set anchors. A 48' Bayliner finally tied up to the dingy dock just as the sun went down after numerous attempts to anchor.
I am sure that most of the boats just dropped anchor with not much thought about how well it was set, it is summer after all.
The wind dropped off after midnight and the rest of the week was great but lesson learned.
