Understandable! It was..........
Another ___________ enigma post!
Double negative, if you please! (Two negatives ='s 1 positive).
So....We don't post because we don't get anything done if we don't!
Meaning we DO post because we-
1. Have something to say or ask.
2. Enjoy camaraderie of each other (friendship, community, sense of belonging).
3. Get a sense of importance and recognition from the group that is gratifying to ourselves. (I know something, people like me, they care about me, etc.)
All fine and good!
Now enter the basic premise that this website is about boating, specifically C-Dory boating.......... and then we have to ask ourselves...
So where do off topic threads and discussions fit in?
Easy answer: Just about anywhere as long as they're friendly, and mutual respect and positive feelings are shared between our members that have different points of view.
Indeed: We've seen lots of non-boating topics of a variety of types that seem to float along OK and not get offensive.
The problem comes when a topic becomes controversial and members dig in and get unpleasant with each other, and sometimes more than that.
Going a step further, a few topics/threads are deliberately chosen as bait knowing others will disagree and a melee will ensue.
At these points, the line is crossed. We're no longer a boating website with members sharing ideas about boating and a few other thoughts, we've become a debate society, with topics that have nothing to do with the purpose of this site, which is to promote our interests in C-Dories and boating. Is this site a soapbox for any and all topics and people? I think not.
We even went as far as to "ban" political and religious topics a few months back, remember?
Now some will claim they enjoy this type of spirited give-and-take, but why not just take the debate to a more appropriate website concerned with such topics?
IMHO: The answer lies in that
they want to enjoy the audience this site provides.
It would be simple enough to go to an appropriate website or even create one of their own dedicated to those C-Brats that want to debate non-boating issues, but that would take all the fun out of it, meaning they enjoy the banter in front of all the other C-Brats. Likewise, it wouldn't be fun to discuss such topics with PM's or emails either. The claim that they're just seeking intellectual truth through discussion doesn't hold water either, because of these considerations.
It's really hard to suggest that we can't discuss certain topics or have to ban or lock certain threads because they become negative, offensive, or stir the pot too much, but our recent history proves otherwise.
I guess we're left with nothing else to do but unplug a topic when it crosses the line.
Maybe we need a system where we have a delete button on the screen with each topic in the "That's Life" category (where these topics belong) which locks up a thread when a sufficient number of members find it offensive.
Sounds Democratic enough, anyway!
