Hey guys, been idle for a long, long while. And have been pondering on such an issue to chose which autopilot for ya motors.

1. Which one would you chose between the Trollmasters and the TR-1 Gold for your kicker

2. Anybody have a TR-1 on their main motor and would like to show some insight into it?

I had a trollmaster on my last boat:19' Arima w/8HP Honda kicker. You are comparing vastly different critters. The trollmaster is strictly a throttle-speed control, whereas the TR-1 is a full function autopilot. Big difference in the prices. I was very happy with my Trollmaster. It was especially nice with the Honda BF8A because the trolling speed was so had to set accurately with the twist-grip throttle. For very slow speed trolling applications like trout or kokanee it worked great. No experience with the TR-1.
 
Wow, that is like comparing apples and oranges! They are both great products from everything I have read. The Trollmaster is just a throttle control and the TR1 a full blown autopilot gear towards fishing. If I had my choice I would have the TR1 with throttle AND wireless remote. That way you have total control of the boat while fishing. Of course also having an autopilot for the main motor would be nice as it would give better control when navigating in the fog from what Dusty has said.
 
What is the primary use for your boat? Equipment choice, in our opinion, is largely dependent upon intended use.
 
Hello My name is Kim but my user name is (Guts) I will use Guts from now on. I would like to say I'm am new to this site. I picked up a Trailer Boat magazine at the doctors office an saw a article on a place called Shelter cove page 79 Trailer Boat magazine April issue, on page 80 I saw a boat that looked interesting. So I went on one of the local boards here in southern ca. and asked what it was? That brings me here! Now I am looking at the 19 and the 16 curser model.

Now I have a Boston Whaler Montauk17 with a DF70 Suzuki. I have a sea star hydraulic steering. And a simrad AP14H auto pilot this is most defiantly the best thing I have put on the boat EVER! I Will NOT EVER have a boat with out auto pilot. The buttons have some arrows printed on them (port&starboard) which wore off in about a year no biggie to me but that's the only complaint I have. I did the install my self it's easy! Just remember to keep the auto pilot compass low (to keep it stable) and away from any speakers (vhf radio)... They have feed back systems but I did not want the wheel turning (to easy to get caught up in)
The rest of the electronics are Furuno 1850Df and 582L thru hull. I have no intention of selling the Montauk17 at this time. If you need pictures I can e-mail them to you. I hope it is ok to talk about other boats here as this is my first post.

Hello Guts.
You are the only other person I ever heard of that had an autopilot on a 17 Whaler.
I also have a Boston Whaler 17 Montauk with a Raymarine autopilot.
I am currently moving the autopilot from my Whaler to my new (used) boat. Autopilots allow the captain to enjoy the ride as much as the passengers.

Chalk up another long-time Montauk owner that won't sell. One of the top pieces of utility equipment ever designed and in my case saves getting fish blood&guts in the CD.

Fishtales I am thinking I would like to buy a c-dory. but there will not be a 16 or a 19 foot in la till July. might go to look at the 22s in Santa Anna Saturday, maybe? have things to do here and I do not really want a 22 footer. I am concerned about the flat bottom and the ride (I just don't know what to expect? I have not read any thing pro or con on the 19 foot model.

I am trying to do my reading (research) on the c-dory and ask some questions, about the boat. they are a good looking boat I just do not know yet.

Oh-- ok. I answered a question about C-Dorys on the AllCoast board a couple months back. Gave links to both owners groups. Bill (DaNerd er DaNag) should post in about his 19'. He sold it and moved up to a 22'.
