Where is everyone?

We're sitting at the town dock at Seneca Falls, NY on the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. Seneca Falls is the home of Woman's Rights, so I'm keeping my mouth shut and head down.

Thanks for the replies..it was getting a bit wierd. Normally, I'm 50 messages behind... so..

Bill & El - do you all have plans to head back west soon?

Mac

Engines doing fine (even if they're not Yamaha, Chris) and they're out of coffee/chocolate/moose stuff, Dun.

Probably head west in late October or early November, after the leaves drop, Mac. Fall back here is marvelous.

Oh oh -- El is out on the dock carrying a placard and chanting something ...

Bill, is El chanting something about RED CAT or can't you make out the words!!!
I will be heading your way EARLY Fri. AM ---will launch in Geneva, then head East --will call on cell phone enroute unless we talk tomorrow night.
LOVE THAT RED CAT
Terry

Hi to all,

We sure enjoyed our time with you all on the canal. Sorry we did not go the distance with the gang, but, we had a good visit with our friends in Fairport. We evan spent a night in Lyons-they have a good musuem and a rebuild historic movie theather.

Bill be sure to give us a report on the new Hondas and the break-in.

The Red Cat wine is sold in Red Lion, Pa at the State Store-now we can relive the cruise as often as we like. Have good travels!

Fred , Pat, and Mr. Black

You're right, Terry -- r-e-d c-a-t!! That's what she's chanting. For you left coasters, there's a Catman on the Erie Canal -- and his other name is Terry. He supplied every boat (and a few bystanders) with a Red Cat. Now, lest felinophiles think he's peddling real cats, his cat comes in a bottle with a cork and is aged from good NY grapes.

Maybe, Brock, he'll send you a bottle so you can have a red cat in your house.

David --
One of our ol' Honda 40's gave up the ghost down in Chesapeake. We've been chugging along on one a'waiting arrival of two shiny new '06 40's fresh off of the boat and they were just put on by a great Honda dealer, Seagers Marine, in Canandaigua, NY. Now we're moseying along the NY canals doing the 20-hour break-in period before heading off to ... somewhere ... still debating where. The northeast is so beautiful this time of year.
Looking forward to sharing a crab (and a brew) with you two on next trip to NW --

Hey gang! I have been burried working the Hurricane Disaster Relief Teams, and will be heading down to Ocean Springs, MS for a 3-5 day trip depending on if I get out today or Friday and if I come back with the Thrust team on Sunday or come back Monday. Bill and El: Yall can come on back down to Lake Martin area for a few days and just follow the color change south. Bring some nice cool air with you. Who knows... we could boat a few days, go further south to help out some folks a few days... There is room for other C-Dory helpers too!!... I simply can not believe there is ol Rita down there kicking up. Looks to be another killer for sure. Hope we fair well in Ocean Springs this weekend and we should based on this morniings PROJECTIONS of where she may come ashore. Looks as if several lessons learned are being tested. I think the quality of life will be much better, even with all the destruction. I wonder why we do not take all the unemployed folks who can not find jobs, let one family member of each of those families work with a large organization digging up dirt from some vacant vast lands in the US that are far inland, then haul all the dirt down south and rebuild these below sea level towns about 15-25 foot above sea level??? Is that not how we built roads, fences, National Parks even back in the World War days??? Youngster here and I can not recall the names of the programs...?? Help me out. Gotta get headed south! Yall have a blessed day!
Byrdman in Bama/headed to MS.

El & Bill-Sounds like other than having to replace your engines,on the boat that is, you are having the usual great time!!
Mac-Don't worry I am way behind the "pros" here too.

Byrdman- way to go on your efforts down there..we are all thinking of you... One of the programs during the 30's was WPA-Works Progress Administration, I think it was called also one called the NRA I think, not National Rifle Assn., but something else...

From another Thread.. David.. " for Kate or her replacement"?

:amgry Argh, controversial post follows, skip if you're PC.

Sorry Byrdman, AFAIC we in the USA have raised a couple of generations worth of empoverished who have come to be dependent upon entitlements and welfare in lieu of physical labor. It's a societal attitude. It's no longer shameful to be on welfare so why work your butt off if it doesn't improve your lot in life or the esteem held by your peers?

The above ain't racial, btw. More whites are poor than blacks or browns, but like missing pretty black girls vs missing pretty white girls, they ain't as newsworthy.

Did I mention my dislike for today's "journalists"? Gak

sigh. For the PC, you were warned not to read this. For the rest, thanks for allowing me to rant about something that has little to do with C-Dorys.

Now where did I put my meds?

Don

Don,

There's nothing wrong in my mind with being PC as the C stands for
"Correct". Your statment that
"More whites are poor than blacks or browns" is only marginally correct since there are more whites in the US than other races. However, the percentage of blacks or hispanics that are below the poverty line in the US is significantly higher than the percentage of whites. See http://www.plu.edu/~poverty/stats/home.html or MANY other sites on the web for some actual data. It's also worth noting that many of the gains from the late '90's (in terms of lowering the percentage below the poverty line) have since been lost after the recession in 2001. E.g. the current estimates are that about 12% of all US citizens are below the poverty line and non-whites are are still far more likely to be below the poverty line than whites.

Finally, it's also worth noting that many who are below the poverty line are "working poor". Minimum wage has gone down in real $'s for more than a decade, labor unions has lost more of their power, and more and more jobs are being sent overseas to lower paid workers. Hence, it's getting harder and harder for those without a college education to make a reasonable wage even with hard work.

As you may have figured out by now, I'm not willing to let blanket statements and assumptions that don't jibe with actual data, stand untouched. Eventually however, I do succumb to excessive noise of a similar type....and I anticipate that will happen soon on this thread too.

Roger on the SeaDNA

I vehemently disagree, Roger.

My statement is absolutely correct and stands on actual bottom line numbers. Please check the figures at http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0904269.html and you will find that some 24 million whites are below the poverty level whereas the blacks are at around 8 million and very close to hispanics. How can it possibly be "marginally correct?"

Of course if you work percentages, the overall racial portrayal changes dramatically, but face it, there's still 4 poor whites for every poor black or hispanic, and where are their faces on the telly? Or the browns, for that matter? My post wasn't about blacks per se, it was about cultural changes and how physical labor is perceived by a growing number of poor of all races on welfare.

I hate to see focusing on percentages marginalize or dismiss the plight of the poor who don't happen to be black, and I still think the problem is societal and is becoming worse due to the changing attitudes toward physical labor for pay AND sensationalism by the media and politihacks.

OK Mike, I took my meds and I better go to sleep now.
