What Trailer Winch Do You Have for Your CD25?

New Moon's trailer winch is a T2005, two-speed with a strap, rated at 2000 lb. It has worked perfectly for 12 years, cranking a boat that's probably 2000 lb heavier than a TomCat. I've replaced the strap with a new one once, but otherwise no problem. It has never bent or showed strain at all.

I may not stress it as much as some do - I generally float the boat onto the trailer bunks with only a foot or so of cranking needed. And I don't launch and retrieve all that often - sometimes only a few times in a summer. I do tow long distances however, 1850 miles in some fairly mountainous country to launch in Prince Rupert, so it gets a fair workout holding the boat onto the trailer. I do have nylon strap tie-downs that help.

I THOUGHT I found what I was looking for on Amazon and so I bought it. Now I seem to be back to Square One.

As you know from the posts at the top of this thread, I wanted a heavy duty geared strap winch to replace the cable winch. The cable frequently kinked and would not come off the drum easily, so I wanted a strap.

The third bullet on the Amazon product features for the "Fulton Heavy Duty 2-Speed Trailer Winch, 3200 Pounds" say "Designed for either rope or strap applications." The "Frequently Bought Together" offers this winch with the Dutton-Lainson 20 foot winch strap with hook, and that's what I bought.

The winch arrived, and the box says "Designed for use with winch strap or rope." The directions inside the box however clearly state that the 3,200 pound winch is "cable only," and one side of the drum does not have the required hole for the bolt to retain the strap. I am not going to drill such a hole in a new winch, and here I sit wondering what the heck I am going to do. I don't want to use cable, and I really don't want to go through the hassle of returning the product.

Bummer...

Marty, that's pretty obtuse for most of the 4000+ of us on the Brats (or it's too early on a Sunday morning!!). :?

Do you mean THIS GUY??

Charlie

Yes, he's my go to trailer guy. We are fortunate to have him nearby, as Pat knows.

drill the hole and attach the strap. that the only difference between a cable unit and a strap unit. not a big deal really.

I agree with Tom (for a change  ) Pat. Go for it, drill the hole.

After all, it can't be any harder than taking off a lugnut!!

Ouch! I resemble that remark!

Pat, someone on this site has a motto that says "If a man cannot be handy, he should be handsome". Or is it the other way around?

Are you really coming east for Langford this year? If you are, I may reconsider my decision not to go, would really like to see you and Patty again!

No, I think I posted look for us back in Lankford again in a couple of year, not this year for sure, probably not next year, but who knows? Where the heck is Tom Callahan, or somebody else with a boat we could borrow? That might have something to do with it!
