Went to the Boats Afloat Show

And... bought a boat! Yes, it’s true, Caryn and I put a deposit down on a 2018 Ranger Tug 23. As I’ve previously mentioned, we’ve been lusting after this boat since it was first introduced at the boat show in 2016. We’ll be taking delivery of the new boat at the beginning of next year. For those of you who don’t know the specifics, the R23 is powered by a 200hp Yamaha, Ranger Tugs first outboard powered boat. We’re very excited about the prospect of cruising the Salish Sea in such a beautiful, comfortable boat but at the same time, I’m very sad about selling C-Dancer.

I have to say that this was an incredibly difficult decision for me. I truly love C-Dancer (yes love that little boat despite it being an inanimate object). Caryn and I built memories that will last a lifetime of our trips and adventures in the Salish Seas over the past 12 years. I really never believed we would actually sell her but alas the time has come for a bigger, roomier, more finished boat with a shower and head (which I desired btw). I’ve invested an incredible amount of time and energy (not to mention boat units) into making C-Dancer the best boat possible over the past 12 years and added tons of options and modifications. Whoever buys C-Dancer will be getting a very well maintained, very well equipped boat with recently added options, plus a practically brand new 1 year old motor with only 61 hours on a 12 year old hull. C-Dancer took us everywhere we ever wanted to go, was totally reliable and as all of you know is incredibly seaworthy. As I stated above, this has been a very difficult decision as I’ve been agonizing over this decision for the past week. But now we're ready to move forward.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, we are looking forward to building new memories over the next decade or so (hopefully) in the R23 and keeping all the fond memories of our 13 wonderful seasons on C-Dancer in the memory banks. I’m having C-Dancer detailed this week in preparation for putting her on the market which will probably happen in 2 weeks or so. For anyone interested, I’ll be posting a detailed “For Sale” listing on this site at that time. Stay tuned.

That's awesome news Peter! We really could see ourselves in that boat too, and admired it at the last boat show we went to.

Your boat should sell itself. You've taken really good care of her. Our c-dory always looked a little sorry for itself compared to your boat at the Everett marina. Someone will get a really great and well sorted boat.

Congrats Caryn and Peter. Looks a lovely boat. I am surprised the number of C-Brats that I know who got 'bigger-itis'. In no particular order, Nordic Tugs, Ranger Tugs, and Camano Trolls, seem very popular at the moment. We really enjoyed our C-Dory, maybe me a bit more than the Admiral. But as we got older the compact confines of our 22 were becoming more uncomfortable.
We love our Troll.
See you on the water 21st May 2018.

Martin and Andrea.

Congratulations, Peter and Caryn! Very exciting! The Ranger 23 and the new 27w/outboard have been a very successful line for the Ranger folks. I think they have found a niche that was under-serviced in the market, and put their Ranger Tug spin on making it comfortable, functional, and attractive.

I will be excited to hear your impressions on the new boat as you take it to your favorite places in the Salish Sea.

The care you have given C-Dancer is well-documented on this forum - someone is going to get a very nice 22! It is not easy making the decision to sell a boat that has served you well over the years... but, circumstances and desires change. Getting a shiny new boat will get you over that.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Wow! Congratulations! Hopefully this means you will be finding more time to adventure on the water. This new boat looks like a good candidate for the Inside Passage. Best, Mike

First off, congrats to Peter and Caryn! There are not two nicer or more deserving folks anywhere, and we are thrilled that you guys are making this move. Ranger has something that C-Dory has not really had since Jeff Messmer and Andrew Custis left C-Dory...great customer service! You'll love it, and we can't wait to see you and your new Ranger 23 at the Friday Harbor gathering next year!

Second, hmm...James, a Ranger 27 with an outboard, you say? Well, that will no doubt never happen for us, but that would be just awesome! More room, better fit and finish AND customer service? That is really mind blowing! Sounds like the perfect Loop boat to me!

Congrats Peter and Caryn! 12 years and 13 seasons, that's a good run for any boat. Just think, now you get to re-live all those memories this time in a bigger more luxurious boat. Hope we get to continue being neighbors at Twin Bridges with the new boat!

I was surprised to read your happy news, Peter, because I recall talking about and walking through the R-23 at last year's boat show. You and Caryn liked it very much but concluded it was a not to be.

I know the feeling, whatever the item or desire might be. Over time a definitely not becomes a some day, then a maybe, then evolves to yes, let's make this happen! That's just such exciting news, and I'm sure you'll love the added comfort, speed and amenities.
P.S. I sure understand your loyalty to C-Dancer. She brought a lot of joy.

Thank you all for the kind words. Fred asked, are we going to be Tugnuts now? I did join the site but as others have said before me, once a Brat, always a Brat!

Very true. Once a brat, always a brat. In fact my elementary school teacher instilled that into me when I was only 6 years old

Doesn't have to be either/or... you can be both. Just ask Joe and Ruth. :D

As of now we are both. But my allegiances after 12 years is obviously with the C-Brats. At this point, I'm starting to pick the brains of the Tugnuts. Just a new adventure all the way around.

Peter, I've been wanting to comment on your thread on Tugnuts but don't have an account there...

Regarding storage, I can understand your desires to be closer to home, possibly saving some $, including extra cost of a camperback. But the main benefit I see of Twin Bridges over outdoor racks like Edmonds, is not just protection from rain and keeping the cockpit clean. More importantly, it's out of the sun in a heated shed. Less worries about winterization, frozen water pipes (and you'll have more of those in the Ranger!), UV damage to plastic panels / canvas enclosures, gelcoat fading (especially dark colored gelcoat like a Ranger), high winds, and seagull poop.

I've watched a lot of boats "rot" away sitting on those racks at Edmonds over the years. For all those reasons and many more (like proximity to my preferred boating territory), any extra cost of TB over Edmonds is easily justifiable for me, and Edmonds is only20 minutes from me. I love my boats as much as you have with C-Dancer, and couldn't see myself putting a boat on the open racks at Edmonds...would much rather give up the convenience and have it on a trailer at home where I can keep it covered with a custom tarp and keep a close watch on it. Are you buying a trailer with your new boat?

Also to consider, would you have onsite Yamaha service available at Edmonds like you would at Twin Bridges? Or will you be doing all your own maintenance?

Obviously I'm a big fan of TB. And I have you to thank for that!

Congrats again, looking forward to seeing the new boat at next year's FHCBGT if not sooner!

-Mike
