Water under the v-berth question...

Hello All,

I looked at 2007 25-c-dory today for possible purchase. Most everything looked great and there have been several upgrades. My one concern...there was a small, round inspection hatch on the cut-away floor under the v-berth (the place where one would place the portable head on a 22). I opened it up and discovered quite a bit of water (a gallon?) in the bilge area, if that's what you call it. It was salty. There was no mold or stench. The current owner had no idea about this. The floor there was covered by a form-fit rubber mat, and I don't think he ever even pulled up that mat or knew that there was a hatch under there.

I did a search of the this forum about this and found that the likely source is either a leak in the anchor locker, or possibly long nails leaking at the keel strip. I don't think this boat has a keel strip....at least not one I noticed, although I will check again. The interior cabinetry is fiberglass, by the way.

Am I on the right track here? Am I missing anything? This does not seem like a fatal flaw to me and i don't mind doing some work on the boat. I realize that I am buying a 14 year old boat and not a new one.

Thanks for any advice,

Johnr

Put some red or yellow cake coloring in a quart or so of water and pour it into the anchor locker. Plug the escape hole. If you have a leak at the anchor locker you will see colored water where you found the salt water. That is how I found the leak in mine

There us a sizable cavity there The leak most likely would be the anchor locker (that had been sealed in my boat), Ir the screws holding the brass strip in place. Either is an easy fix, Not a reason to reject the boat. That it was salt water would send to favor the brass strip. But if water was pushed back thru the drain of the anchor locker it could be salt.
