water in transom

This has happened to me twice in chop, and I'm 1) having a hard time isolating the variables and 2) wondering how common it is. When I'm at cruising speed, water will shoot up behind one of the Hondas and bubble into the transom well, quickly filling it. The trim angle and wave direction don't much seem to matter, and nothing I do short of stopping seems to affect the flow. Any insights from you veterans?

Do you mean the transom well (just in front of the engines) or the cockpit area below the transom?

Are your motors too deep in the water? If the anti-ventilation plates(cavitation plates) are below the bottom edge of the transom, the leading edge of the motor leg can cause spray or roostertales.

I've never had the kind of problem you describe but generally when I getup on plane, I raise the motors a bit to get a nice clean looking flow out the back. If you don't, you get a lot of drag and generally ugly looking flow back there. From what I see just before I trim the motors out, I could see how I might end up with water in the transom well if I didn't do so.

We have the same boat/same year as you with twin Honda 40's and have never had that issue, even in small craft advisory weather. We waited a year before putting trim tabs on so I don't believe that would be an issue.

If we are just sitting or trolling in chop it has happened, but it is due to us moving slower than the incomming waves.

You may want to take a couple photo's of it happening and take the boat and photo's to the dealer who installed the motors.
