WA State Park docks

I wanted to hear from seasoned veterans with regards to the WA State Parks docks.
Do you generally find that there is space to moor there? I know that it is very dependent on holidays, etc. but if you get there on a Thursday, before a holiday weekend, do you think you would find moorage?
We are trying to get a feel for if we should even try on Memorial Day weekend or not. I know that you cannot reserve dock space, except I think at Jones, so that will either hurt or help us.
We aren't really set up yet to anchor out so that really isn't an option right now. Hopefully soon though!

Thanks!!
Julie

In the seattle area thursday would be iffy, in my opinion. Blake Island would probably not have dock space late on thursday. I would guess the san juans would be the same. But this year is going to probably be a little different. There will be a lot of boats that won't pay the high price of gas for the trips. I went to some local lakes here in oregon the last two weekends. The weather has been great, but not much boating activity. And the ski and wake board boats that are out don't do much running.

As far as I know Julie, you can't reserve dock space on any State Park dock, nor can you even leave a dingy on a buoy to reserve one. I think you will be able to get dock space if you go on a Thurs. Sometimes you have to hang out for a little bit, for some day tripper to decide it is time to head for home.

Thanks for the replies!! I think we will just try our luck and maybe try to head out Thursday after work and try either Penrose or Jarrell's cove. I think we will probably get our anchor set up before we do head out, just in case. We will just have to keep it all in the cockpit as we don't have a bow setup yet.
I agree about the gas situation. Our trips will be mainly to and from, not alot of cruising around, and fairly close for this year!

Jeff and Julie,
I agree pretty much with the other folk, and with the prices you may very well have an easy time finding a spot, epsecially with leaving Thursday and with hopefully the big boats sitting in their respective slips and houses.

As we have backed out of the Princess Louise trip due to gas prices, we have decided to use our vacation days a little closer to home. We are going to explore the south sound from May 26th to the 30th. We will be launching out of Olympia (Swantown). Hope to hit Jerrells Cove for sure, and poke into some of the interesting bays south & west of Tacoma. So, if your in the area, come on out & play. We will monitor VHF 68. We have no set plans, so if you have some suggesting as what to do/ where to go, sound off.
That goes for anyone that will be in the south sound area, lets try & hook up.

Terry, Anne,
The Public Dock in Gig Harbor is FREE for 48 hours. Also, the newly refurbished docks at Joemma Beach would make a great place for a C-Brat gathering.

If you will PM your phone #, we will give ya a call and try to set something up. You know the area best, where would you suggest for a short notice CBGT.
Where is this Joemma Beach?
Hope we can get together with you three.

Terry,

That sounds like fun! We actually got a reserved spot at the marina in Jarrell's cove. Some friends have a place out there and we are there "guests". We lucked out on this one!
Hopefully we will see you out and about. We will leave from Foss hopefully about 9am or so on Friday.
