I am headed to Salt Lake tomorrow morning and am spending the first night in Pendleton. I was thinking of not taking I-90 to Ellensburg and then I-82 to Pendleton and instead heading east out town to see Winthrop, Twisp, Wenatchee, etc. Mapquest says it is a 8-9 hour drive to Pendleton. Is this a reasonable estimate? I remember going N from Ellensburg and driving on US-2 through Leavenworth (to go home) and it took forever (but there was a lot of holiday/summer traffic.) I don't want to repeat that experience. If going through Winthrop will be a slog I will save that for another trip when we can devote more time to exploring the area.

Thanks for any advice!

Warren, I love that drive to the Methow Valley over hiway 20. But I think if I were headed to Pendelton, I would save the drive for another time when you can explore and not be in a hurry. Too many grand views and places to stop and explore. My favorite time of year is in Sept/Oct when the leaves start to turn, the mornings are crisp and the days are not 100 degrees.

That being said, today probably will be a good day to make the drive in that it is midweek, the "heat wave" is a day or two away, but, I think that it will be all of 9 hours.

Which ever route you take, have a good trip!

Thanks everyone. I got up early this morning so I have the time and am going to take Hwy 20!
