Use of Scotty Trap-eeze & compatability with Fish-On Mou

Hopefully you guys with more fishing/crabbing expertise (I have zero fishing knowledge and very little crabbing experience) can chip in and answer this question.

Our boat has 2 Fish-On flush mounts (one on the port side and one on the starboard side) which we have used in the past for mounting our Magma BBQ grill.

I have seen a device online called the Scotty Trap-eeze (see http://www.cabelas.com/product/Scot...+hand+pulley&WTz_l=Header;Search-All+Products) which is a plastic hand pulley for Crabbing that is designed - per Cabella's website - to be compatible with either Scotty or Cabella's fishing rod holders.

Would this Scotty Trap-eeze work with our Fish-On flush mounts?

I sent an e-mail to Tempress Products and some marketing person told me they would not but a guy I spoke to at Cabella's said he thought they would so I am even more confused then usual (which is considerable!).

Does anybody know for certain if the Scotty Trap-eeze will work w/ the Fish-On flush mounts? I don't see such a device designed for Fish-On mounts nor do I want to drill another hole in the boat if I don't have to.

Thanks for any insights on this stuff.

Take care,

You don't need it any how. I have one some where in the garage and never use it as it sucks. It does not hang out far enough to do any good and it flips over and pops out the line every other time I use it. Its just easier to lean out and pull with your hands at chest level.

The Scotty Trap-eze most likely will not fit in the Fish-on rod holder mount. However, there is a very good possibility that the cogged ends will mate up. You may be able to use the Fish-on part to go into the mount, and then mate the Scotty part where it pivots and is held together with a thumb screw (bolt).

If you only have the mounts but not the rod holder, you'll have to buy one. You could go into a sporting goods store and see if Fish-on and Scotty parts will mate together at the cogged ends, first.

I connect a Folbe rod holder to a Scotty downrigger at the pivot points.

If all that doesn't make sense, I can take some photos to illustrate it better.

Thanks for the feedback Tom and Rick.

All these mounts are confusing stuff for a non-fisherman. Definitely not worth it if I have to buy a rod-holder also. As Tom suggested - since we do not crab all that often - I will just continue pulling by hand leaning out a bit more.

Rick.... you and Shirley should head north for the La Conner CBGT on July 26th. Haven't seen you guys for awhile.

Tom... See you and Susan soon in La Conner!

Thanks again for the feedback.

Take care gents!

We would, but I'll be out at Westport starting a week of salmon hunting. The tides that week are just too good to pass up.

Dan,

We have the Scotty Trap-eeze. Used it before we bought a pot puller. It does the job in terms of providing a pulling system for your rope to roll on. Better than rolling on your gelcoat. I'm not sure if it will fit a Fish-on mount.

I'm pretty sure I have an extra Scotty mount if you're interested in changing the mounts out. They do sell the mounts at fishing tackle stores for around $10 or so if you want to go that route.

Thanks for the offer Peter. I will just rough it I guess as Tom suggested and - as a side benefit - build up the pecs..... not worth worrying about for the few times we go crabbing.

Hope you and Caryn are doing well. Do you guys still have the boat up at Twin Bridges? If so you ought to come join us at La Conner also! The more the merrier. Seems like a smaller turnout this year so far based on the sign-up sheet.

You been getting out and doing much fishing this year Peter? Or work or other stuff keeping you guys busy? Hope you two are enjoying the nice weather and staying healthy.

Take care and thanks again for the offer,
