Unusual Wave of Violence Strikes Police Officers

Thanks, Warren...and believe me, I try to not be complacent. To say this is not on our minds would be lying or in denial. It is on everyone's mind @ work, especially w/ the media coverage of recent incidents in Seattle in the past few months. That said, I work w/ very professional deputies/officers who know the risks and accept them. We go to work every day and continue to do our jobs as best as possible. We watch each other's backs but nothing is guaranteed. My son has been on a force for only ~ 3 yrs, so even after I retire, I'll carry the concern w/ me daily.

One of the sad aspects of the majority of these incidents is that the offenders are repeat offenders that should have been locked up with the key thrown away years ago. Not only should those that inflict physical harm on our officers be permanently incarcerated, but as far as I'm concerned any individual that leads police officers on a high speed chase should never be given another opportunity of the freedom to walk our streets. As the offenders speed down our highways and streets they are continuously putting the lives of our law abiding citizens at risk.
Knowing that our incarceration facilities are bulging at the walls, I am not adverse to banishing the offenders to an isolated island where they are left to fend for themselves and thereby saving the American taxpayer the money to house, feed, and provide medical care for them!

It is not often that I rant on the site, but I get sick and tired of responding to motor vehicle collisions that are caused by those that have had their drivers licenses suspended for numerous previous infractions most notably under the influence of drugs and alcohol and are still out there waging major carnage on our roadways.

Keep up the great work Mark, and your fellow officers. Thank you for what you do! I know that you do your best, unfortunately our justice system (read "we the people") keep allowing them back on our streets for you to re-arrest them.

Whew.....thanks Warren for getting my red hot blood circulating this morning. Now I'm off to the station to work out with the weights and stair climbing machine..... :thup

Time for tighter gun control laws??

Anyone wishing to go down the road with this discussion, will be greeted with a locked thread ASAP.

This is not the place.

Dave, I have no argument in opposition to your post. Oh, if I were King for a day...

As for gun control...I can see I've been beaten to it. Might as well talk abortion...nope...not me.

I think the main cause of the up tick in violence is the media. Why? because violent crimes across the board are down crimes against officers are down. Its just the media taking advantage of unconnected but similar events. Well they were not that similar. the walmart shooting, the Oregon shooting and the Florida shooting where all in the line of duty while approaching repeat offenders, but the officers in the police station was different. the shooter came there looking for some one to shoot. That is the scary one. the others where all trying to get away.

I agree with Dave about the repeat offenders. Our laws have gotten to soft and sentences to short. prison is just not a deterrent any more. One of my buyers this last year works at the local prison in Monroe. The prisoners have gotten the system down pat. I goes like this. they go to jail for what ever, just before they are release they force the guards to restrain them, then they sue the prison and the prison will settle for 5 to 10k when they are released. They go party and run around for a few months until they run out of cash, get tired of there wives / girlfriends bitching at them about jobs child support etc.. and they go get arrested on purpose so they can hang out with there friends and play ball or lift weights all day. It sound crazy but they are crazy.

Oh how do they get the guards to restrain then you ask. That's easy, they shit in their hand and throw it at the guards ( like monkeys at a zoo) then beat their own heads in to a wall so they have to be given medical treatment. Now the guards have to come into the cell. when they do the cons fight like hell and afterwards sue the prison for use of force. its crazy but there is a group of cons at Monroe that do it over and over again, about 200 of them.

what to do about it?? chain gangs. every one works every day. not more tv, lifting, sports, reading , education, just hard sweaty work. dont work do eat. Make prison a bad place to be again.

as long as I'm typing lets talk about sentences. first time rape= death , first time murder= death, attempted murder= 20 years, assault= 10 years, theft =10 years . second time offences we double the time.

It's time to privatize the prisons. Arizona and Texas would love to have our prisoners for their "private" prisons. That would cut down the corrections costs for the state plus the prisoners would discover that the private prisons would be much more strict. I wouldn't even be against siting them in foreign countries. Then even a short prison term would have real impact on a felon.

Back when I worked in Hawai'i the State began shipping felons off to Arkansas for their terms. They had private prisons w/ space and it cost less than building new prisons back in the State.

Man did people complain! It wasn't "fair", the families would miss their criminal family members, the ACLU filed suit sayin it violated the prisoner's "rights"...the state did it anyway. The result; no one wanted to be shipped out to "Haole-land". In other words, it made prison SUCK, just like it should. I'd imagine being in a Texas private prison would sure open some eyes.

Tom – why do you want to be so lenient on an attempted murder? He/she tried to do the same thing as someone that was successful. Both people had the same thing in mind and attempted to carry out the murder. One was successful and one was not. So now you want to let the one that was not successful out so he/she can try again?

Be careful with death sentences for rape – it may not always be what it seems. For brutal rape where the victim is kidnapped and raped or brutalized, I agree - death. A boy friend/girl friend parting with too much to drink and the girl takes advantage of the boy because he is too drunk to say no. Then he sobers up and realizes he has lost his virginity and claims rape. The girl should not be put to death.

Dave your right on the attempted murder. lets make it 40. as for the rape thing, and all kidding aside, I was talking about rape not stupidity on the victims side. Sorry everyone but I saw that happen in the corp to many times. I was assuming rape as a violent attack and nothing else.

I was being light on all the punishments because no one wants to hear what I think should really be done.
