I recently read on, C Brat, that at some point the transom coring changed from Balsa to a different material. Does anyone know when this occurred, or if this occurred? If so what was the material?
I have a 1998 16 Cruiser and the coring of the entire vessel is sound. But, I just happen to be one of those guys who wants to know as much about my C Dory as possible.
I just recently added some rod holders in a couple of locations and it was definitely Balsa Core. Drilled, dug out a 1/4" then epoxied opening and screw holes before installation.
I was thinking about trim tabs and wondered if there was a different recommended installation technique for coring materials other than Balsa. Though I can't see how drilling and epoxy wouldn't be the technique for any material.
I have owned many boats in the past, but since I have a C Dory now (and listening to you guys) I have a much greater respect for installing accessories as problem free as possible. I know for a fact I will never disrespect another vessel by drilling and silicone ever again. Whether future vessels are a C Dory or not!
