Trailer centering guides

I loaded my boat onto my new trailer for the first time yesterday and didn't get it centered as closely as I would have wanted.

After reading the ideas on a previous thread I am wondering what the best guide is to install on the trailer. Most times we will be loading the boat without an adjacent dock.

1. No guide, just remember the correct location.

2. Guides to the top of the cockpit. Should the guide be on one side or both sides? Flexible or solid?

3. Short guides like in RichardM's photo album. His are essentially solid bunks that contain the hull. They are stronger due to the shorter moment arm.

Were the guides home-made or purchased?

Thanks

We have guide bunks. Came w/ the trailer. They pretty much center the boat on the trailer but you cannot see them when the trailer is submerged. I can tell if I'm perfect as I pull out because if the boat is centered I have about 1-2" clearance at each fender to the hull. Sometimes I'll have to back down for a slight "adjustment" by The Admiral on the dock.

Best are the side bunks, as Local Boy describes. These are galvanized square tubing, with an actual short bunk on them--actually my bunks are about 6 feet long...I also have the tall pVC pipe over square tubing, since you cannot see the side bunks, when the trailer is under water.

The 25 is even more difficult, since if you are more than an inch or so off, the boat chine will be on the fender...
