Towing with the short Tahoe

Greetings,

Another Jeep guy here, a fairly light 96' cherokee, straight 6 engine with class C rated tires, heavy duty shocks and auto with tranny cooler. Towed a 22' cruiser with tandem axle trailer from Sacramento, CA. to Lake Powell Arizona, and back with no sway problems at all. The only thing I was lacking was a little grunt in the mountains down around St. George, Utah area.

Something definitely seems amiss here with the Tahoe. If a Jeep Cherokee can handle a 22' C-dory, a Chevy Tahoe should be no problem at all. Like others, I think the problem is the tires and shocks....it's a good starting point before ya go the sway control devices route.

fixed my shot Tahoe towing problem for my TomCat...with my new retirement sleed. 05 Excursion with turbo-diesel. Sweeeet other than having to pay for her. Byrdman on FreeByrd OK.... where is the insert button as to allow me to insert a photo???

Please forget the insert a photo question.... I see in the mult-comments on the bottom right that "You can not attach photos in this forum....".. So, I will attempt to post photo in my photo album....

We tow our 22' C-dory with an Isuzu Trooper. We're pushing our luck a little as it is rate for 5000 lbs and the boat + trailer + stuff and fuel comes in at 4200 +/- a bit. The Trooper has a V-6 rated at about 210hp so it lags a bit up steep hills but otherwise does OK. We added air lifters to the rear and that made a world of difference towing. No sway and also keeps the rear end up a bit under the tongue load (made the difference between scraping and not going in and out of my driveway). We have to manually inflate the lifters so in practice we leave them inflated at a pressure appropriate for towing the trailer. The downside of this is that the ride is a good bit rougher over the speed bumps when the trailer isn't connected. Overall though, I like the lifters.

Brydman-

Sure you can put photos in the messages. I think the "You cannot..." applies to other types of files.

I stuck the pic of your new rig in your last message so you could see how it's done. Just click to edit your message, and you'll see what it took to get it there. The URL that is pasted between the {img} tags I got by clicking the picture in your album up to full size, right clicking on the picture, and then choosing Properties. Then highlight and copy the URL from the Properties box to paste into the message. Sounds tricky at first, but it is real easy.

Hey - nice truck! Very nice.

Sigh...you'll always be a dork. I had such high hopes you would attain nerdness some day.

No need to have somebody edit a message to see how the code works - just use the "code tag", and you can type it in a message for all to see. Here's what should be typed in for your example:

Code:

Well, at one time I thought about being a nerd, but I just wasn't smart enough. Now with the wisdom of years, nerdness might be attainable, but I am wise enough to think better of it. People do strange things when educated beyond their intelligence.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. The 4WD 5.3L V8 2001 Tahoe did a fine job of towing Wanderer from Annapolis MD to Marathon FL. With visits to family along the way, we towed about 1500 miles. Before we left, I adjusted the tongue weight to 250 pounds, added air bags inside the rear coil springs and inflated all tires to maximum recommended pressures. I think all of those measures helped. In addition to two passengers, the vehicle carried about 200 pounds of gear in its back half. For the entire trip, we averaged 10.77 MPG at speeds mostly around 65 MPH. On cruise control, the tach would be at 2000 until a hill or overpass demanded a shift with the tach going to 2500-3000.

I found that the testing for sway that I did at home was too aggressive. On the trip, too-quick of a lane change would cause a modest two cycle sway. No emergency or even sudden stops were needed. A passing semi, going in the same direction, caused a brief push away.

The Tahoe is adequate for the flat land towing we did.

Just added a picture to see if I could!!
