Towing a 16 footer

Manatee the other white meat..

As for that other thing, I was never stuck. I was temporally unable to continue forward movement. Had I been stuck I would still be there. The boat never got stuck, I merely used a alternate form of propulsion (walking the boat) to demonstrate the merits of a flat hull. As I often tell Susan “if I was lost we would never have gotten home”

Charlie,

Precisely. That's why I use a diesel HD2500 in 4WDlow so I can just crawl up the ramp at idle and still hear if the Admirable yells at me to stop

Question. Does the Escape have AWD or 4X4? A decent launch ramp with a sensible grade and you might not even need 4X4. A RWD would be preferred IMO.

marty The Subaru outback has the CVT transmission and it's rated for 2700lb . You might want to go down to Ford dealer and ask the parts dept if there is a big difference between the 4cyl and 6cy springs ,wheels , trans ,etc.lI think the transmission in the ford might be the weak link probably not as hefty as subaru ?

Marty the boat weighs 1100lb the engine about 300lb trailer 500-600lb and extras maybe 200lb So that makes it about 2000-2200 lb probably alilltle lighter Go weigh the boat . I think if you like the Volvo and Ford keep them both and trade out ins 6 months on ford and 6 months on volvo or sell them both and get a Subaru Forester tows 2400lb Just my 2cents worth See you at the Seattle gathering Jim

That's what I've been doing. I'll just keep doing it. The Volvo only has about 150,000 miles on it, my mechanic says it's hardly broken in. Yet it's only worth about $1300, according to Edmunds. I look forward to meeting you at the SBS.

SIDEBAR

A short Subaru story.

Several years ago, a group of sailor meet for a gathering on Lake Pend Orielle, N. Idaho. We met on the lake and arrived at different times but were all sailing the same boats (Montgomery 15's). As we were all departing the lake we decided to meet at a local restaurant for lunch before the drive home. there it was at 12 noon, and in the parking lot were 5 sailboats, all hooked up to......yup, 5 Subaru's, 2 Outbacks and 3 Forrester's.

That boat, loaded for the week, trailer, OB and gear weighed in at about 1500# and we never even felt like it was there behind the Outback.

BACK TO THE THREAD.

The Forrester would be a great to rig for the 16, and it is a pretty nice everyday rig as well. (IMHO)

Hi Marty:
Good to hear from you again! My comments concerning the Ford Escape Hybrid AWD's towing ability are really based on what I've been told by various Ford dealers recently. They all tell me you can't tow at all with the Hybrid. I'm going to investigate this further & try to find out the reasons why! Patti & I are trying to move up to Anacortes & that would require me having to launch & recover my 16' Angler myself at the Washington Park ramp. Currently, I launch & recover by crane/sling at Channel Islands in Oxnard where I keep the boat. My trailer has not even been in the water at all. If we do move, I will need to purchase a tow vehicle & I really do like the Escape AWD. If it turns out that the Hybrid really can't do the job, I'll probably get the V-6. I'll let you know if I find out definitively about the Hybrid. Hope to see you again in the near future!

You can hear over your diesel??? HMMMM, must be a Duramax. It sure isn't a Cummings or Cornbinder.

Marty:
I inquired today about the Escape Hybrid's supposed lack of any tow capability at the Ford dealer in Oxnard. According to the service manager, the transmission design is the weak link.
Patti & I are heading back up to Anacortes 11 February to check on the builder's progress (If any!). I'll check out the sling hoist deal at the Skyline Marina. Thanks for the tip.
