Tie Bar?

I apologize in advance; I am certain this topic has been addressed many times.

My CD-22 has a Honda 90 and a Honda 9.9 kicker.

I am looking for opinions on what the best tie bar is between these two motors.

I am told that if I use a tie bar both motors have to be "down". It seems to me that having the 9.9 "down" when not in use would reduce performance & fuel economy.

I'm asking the experts here... Is there a better solution? Is there a tie bar that can easily be removed when not needed?

Thanks!

I made the brackets to fit on the splashwell side of motors. As far as durability I replaced the ball ends this Jan. after 18yrs & 3 boats. I disconnect the kicker end when not in use. :beer

I also have the new Honda 90 and 9.9 kicker combination. I have a stainless quick release steering tie bar like the one from Cabella's. Here's a picture of the bar on a little different mount. I found this picture on the C-Brat site. I don't have one handy showing my mount, but it's similar.

I also couldn't find it tonight at Cabella's but I'll bet its still there. I think the cost was around $50 or so. I never disconnect it. I run with the kicker up and the main down, or with both down. I don't run with the main up and kicker down. I could do it if I didn't turn the engines much I guess. I've raised the main part way and the steering gets real vague. Having the main down makes it like a rudder and the steering's much better.

I have the Honda twin throttle control and the steering tie bar. It works great, and with both engines running I can spin the boat in its own length, just like the big twin engine fishing boats. Very handy some times.

I use the same tie bar jlastofka. They are made by Stearns or Panther and can be bought for about $50. I think you can find them at West Marine or Boaters World. And yes, you don't have to remove it or keep them both in the down position. When I fish, I use the kicker and put the main in the up position.

I would do a couple of things differently now. I attached the tie bar directly to the main on a threaded screw hole that was already there on the Suzuki. I'm going to add an extension plate at least 2" long so that the bar doesn't bind on turns. The other thing to be aware of is that if you keep the bar on the boat, despite being stainless steel, the push on adaptors at both ends of the bar seem to rust quite easily. From now on I'll probably take it home with me each time.

Here's a picture of Sark's tie bar on E-fishin-C.

I'm have to change my tie bar arrangement. :sad Would you believe the connections are on the backs of the motors. :smileo I didn't believe it when I saw it. :disgust I thought they were "Flush Out" fittings. The only way to connect them is standing in the water behind the boat :crook One more thing on my list of "Things to make right". :smiled Jack

I just visited Ezsteer's website and sent them an email. Perhaps this solution will work for me. Next I will need to find out how complicated and expen$ive it is to get dual controls at the helm to take full advantage of the motor.

Currently I can only control the 9.9 from the cockpit (tiller model), and it has not had 3 hours put on it in the past 2 years. Just too inconvenient to use in my humble opinion.

C-Gypsy,
Are you trying to make your problem more complicated than it really is. :crook All you really want to do is use the main motor for a rudder while you are powering with the small motor. What you need is a tie bar similar to the one Tstrm and I use, mounted onto the FRONT of the motors, where it's redly accessible. The connectors are nothing more than AirQuip hose fittings and the Tie Rod is two pieces of tubing with a spring detent. On my main motor I used the front hole on the "Tiller Bar" (steering is in the back one), but on the small motor I had to bolt a bracket to the front of the motor. As for motor speed you're only going to use two, trolling, or cruising and those can be set with the throttle lock on the small motor.
Happy Cruising :smiled Jack

C-Gypsy – an inexpensive control for your kicker is the ConTrollking (Remote Throttle Control). I was like you. The kicker was just too inconvienent to use. With the tie bar and the ConTrollking, I have started using it more.

When I called ConTrollking, they sent one to me within two days without payment on my part. He said if I was happy with it send him a check, if not send the unit back. It was very easy to hook up. Took less than 40 minutes to do it.

C-Gypsy,

If you just want to steer while running the kicker, the tie bar without the throttle linkage may be all you need.

On the other hand, if you have the hi-thrust 9.9 and you can hook it up to the Honda twin throttle/shift lever console along with your 90, you'll have the advantage of twin engine manouvering around slips and docks, just like the big twin engine boats. It's a LOT of fun and easy to do. There are even times when it's a major safety advantage to your gelcoat and other people's nearby equipment.....

It's a little tight back there and you have to be careful of the clearances for cables and engine covers and stuff, but if you get it worked out it's nice to have.

All I need now is to hook up a remote tilt switch for my 9.9 so I can tilt it from behind the boat, like the 90, instead of having to go inside and use the throttle mounted control. That will be nice for trailering and rinsing and other operations.
