The Captian is free and safe!

Matt, I don't disagree with you. It's not that simple though. READ THIS Read the links too....

They don't sail "by Somalia". These guys are hundreds of miles (even ~a thousand) off shore. It's moved out into the Indian Ocean now. I'm sure the bad guys are having as hard a time finding targets as we are in finding them. The idea of a "Blackwater" like team on each inbound ship, transferring when they are outbound to another inbound ship sounds workable. Those guys are paid/trained and would be a deterrent. The pirates wouldn't try it many times. They could even fly a code flag that the pirates understood meant "armed protection on board". Then, after a few tries, each ship could fly it whether they had the protection on board or not. Sort of like a plain clothes Sky Marshal. Call them Sea Marshals

Hi Charlie,
I know it's a large area, on CNN they referenced the area of sea at about half the size of the continental US. What I mean is whenever they are sailing near that region there should be expectations of piracy.

I think the idea of Sea Marshals is a good one. I think it's ridiculous they operate without any apparent consequence and ships continue to sail the region without any apparent preventative measures in place.

I know there are a lot of complicated factors, risks, and costs to consider but it cranks me up.

From what I've read, the insurance companies fear the lawyers more than they fear the pirates. Add me to the "cranky" list.

Oh, and to Charlie the EE, my cardiologist happens to hold a PhD EE as well. Every time I see him I think of you. As in "What the heck was I thinking?" :wink

In the short run, it seems to me that the only workable plan would be to organize the shipping boats (and if possible cruise and pleasure boats) into convoys of boats traveling at the same speed and then have one (or a small number of) military vessels accompany the convoys. This would remove the freedom of scheduling from the shippers but would result in many much smaller area of ocean that needs to be protected. Protecting fishing vessels is obviously a more difficult problem.

In the long run, Somalia needs a functioning government.

Probably Harper, thanks. A google on that brings this blog to the front, never had read it before but apparently a bunch of Marines felt the same way...

Can't visualize the connection with stabilizing the scope and where the bore is pointed however....You gotta move the scope onto the target, and it's locked to the bore... I'm not sure even how the stabilized binoculars work either.... I'm an EE, not a magician!

Now I'm NOT an expert. That said, modern holographic weapons sights like an Eotech http://www.eotech-inc.com/ or similiar, are very accurate. When looking through the sight, as long as the red dot is anywhere in the red circle and they are on target, that's where your round is going downrange. Pretty amazing. Of course the sight and the weapon must be zeroed in together once mounted.

My goodness, you'd think I'd know that... I work for L3 Communications... Given that it's 85+ companies, with about 100K employees, I'm not surprised though.

Pretty cool!
