Suzuki DF140 - Gear Oil Change

Is it normal to hear a little scrapping when engaging the engines for the first time after a gear oil change?

I followed the manual but am uncomfortable with what I heard. The scrapping went away after a few seconds and didn't return then I tried again.

Was this sounds a result of the initial oil circulation?
Would this happen if the gear oil was too low?

I called a suzuki mechanic and was told they fill the gear oil and "let it settle" and then add more.

It is fairly viscus oil. Check the top fill hole to be sure that there is oil there.
Scraping sound is not normal…but if it went away, should be OK. I do wait until the oil has settled before running the engine.

There is often a "clunk" as you engage the gears, with engine idling.

Not much in the oil change which can go wrong.

Sand between prop & housing will make a grinding noise.
If the gear case is making the noise you would have a Bunch of metal chunks in the oil you just changed.
