I've been considering making a custom box that fits beneath the radar arch for storing items. Has anyone ever done this? I think it would be handy to keep accessories and such out of the way. I was planning on a spring loaded door/ hatch facing the cockpit. I am sure that weight has to be taken into consideration as you do not want to be top heavy but I am curious to see if it has been done and if there are any cautions to heed.

I would think that a car top carrier would be something that can be easily modified to go on the top of a C-Dory. These come in a variety of styles and materials.

Even though some of them can be a little pricey (e.g. Thule) they might be the same or less than a custom design (unless you can do it yourself).

My 22 has rails that run the length of the roof and they would be handy for mounting something up there.
 
Thanks, that's a good option. I was thinking that I would keep the width of the box to the depth of the radar arch so it would be approx. 96" wide x 16" high x 20" deep. This way I could still haul a tender or kayak over the cabin if desired.

look into truck tool boxes for the beds. That might be a good source for a pre made box that you can alter.
