Steering

Just looking to add to my limited boat knowledge. My stern drive bowrider has what I would call power steering, very little effort required. I read here of hydraulic steering on an outboard. Is there power assisted hydraulic steering and non-assisted types or just one type?

Thanks,

Jake

On boats our size, for hydraulics there's different brands but basically they are all the same general operation. The wheel is hooked to a pump that is manually operated when the wheel turns. This sends hydraulic fluid down one line or the other. One line drives a ram in one direction, the other line drives it in the other direction. The ram is hooked through a linkage to the engines. To my knowledge, there are not power assisted pumps that are appropriate for the size engines we need to turn.
