Steering rod location for Honda 90 and 8 hp

Folks;
I have a Honda 90 and a 8 hp which can be connected with a steering rod to allow for steering of the trolling motor with the main steering wheel. The problem is that the rod connecting the two motors goes on the lower back end of each of the legs and it is a major production to put on the connecting rod. Is it possible to move the location of the steering arm to the front of the Honda motors? I see that Edin ( Lady-C ) was able to place his steering arm on the front of his Yamaha motors. Has anyone done this for their Hondas?

Without seeing your setup I think you have a EZ Steer rod. If you change over to a Sterns set up you can tie the two motors at the front. The Sterns are just a leagth of all thread that you cut to size and a couple of quick disconnects and two ball connectors which you mount to your motors. Good set up use them myself. The only thing that I found that I did not like was with the way my kicker is mounted on my boat the gyometry is off so that I either can make tight right turn, or adjust it to make a tight left turn but not both Still I would not go back to the EZ Steer.

What Chuck said!

EZ Steer, while functional, is a PITA to connect once underway. The Sterns is the way to go. If you need, I can get a photo in the near future.

That's how I hooked up my Honda 90 and Nissan 6, like Rick, except I had to make an aluminum bracket to attach to the Honda so the rod was in the correct position to operate smoothly.

That is how mine is set up also. Except my kicker is mounted on the port. I think that my biggest coplaint about the EZ steer is that the detents would wear and than the kicker would not hold true. Would happen to me even after they came out with the dual detent bars.

I have a Honda 90 and 9.9 kicker on the port side. The only complaint or dumb ass thing I did was hydraulically tilt the 9.9 into the steering push rod when the motors were turned and the push rod was extended. It bent and was a PIA to replace. Other wise it works good. Just don't tilt the 9.9 into the push rod. :wink:

I leave it connected and only unhook it to service the engines. I had the same question several years ago and ended up installing the link upside down to get the clearances required....it worked.
