When I was in college in the early 1960's, I saw one of these on a car in a wrecking yard:

I seem to remember that the car was a 1947 DeSoto, but the photo source thinks othrwise:

"In the late 30's or early 40's Buicks came with a rotating knob set down into one of the steering wheel's spokes on the left. It had a horizontal handle running across the center of a seven inch circle. You could grasp the handle and rotate the steering wheel with ease. They were legal because they could not grab your shirt sleeve but more expensive to make than a necker knob and were no longer offered.
You could get your long sleeved shirt sleeve caught in a suicide knob and it could lock the car in a turn. Long Sleeved shirts have a slit in the arm and the cuff is buttoned. When you were driving with both hands on the wheel and not using the knob, it could get caught in the open part of the cuff and you could not turn the wheel. Thus the name Suicide Knob. "
Having trouble parking your C-Dory at the dock?
Maybe you need one of these:
