I am getting the boat ready to chase a few fish out of Garibaldi and am having trouble getting some stains out of the gelcoat in the motorwell. My boat collects the small cones from my douglas fir trees during the winter, and it appears that a mold or mildew has set up under them. My guess is to try some bartender's friend, but I don't have any here at the beach house. Any other suggestions? I tried the stain removal gel, but got limited results.
 
Maybe the Collinite cleaner, or a light rubbing compound?
 
That should work good. Cleans most everything else.
 
Another option is a very fine wet/dry sandpaper, used wetted with water. Say, start with 1500 grit and "work down" to 1000 or so to see if it removes the stain (but I would not go below around 600 probably because you are also removing a sliver of gelcoat as you go).

I know that normally one "works up" through the grits when actually using it to sand/smooth things, but in this case I figure it'd be better to start "high" and only go down as far as necessary. Then once the stain is gone, if you've gone down to 1000 or lower, you could work your way back up again.

Of course best to try in the ol' "inconspicuous area," if possible (of course since when do stains appear in inconspicuous areas :amgry)

PS: Interesting that FSR didn't work (if that's the gel remover you tried). Years ago, I had some organic stains (orange from some sort of one-time pine shedding that was not the normal type) that Would Not come out of white gelcoat, no matter what I tried - until I tried FSR. (That said, I think wet sanding would also worked but I didn't think of it until after I used the FSR.)
 
Use Bon Ami.......

This stuff will get red wine off fiberglass. Used it for years and it contiues to amaze me as to what it will remove. It's not toxic, nor does it leave a mess and cleans up with water.

Jon, that isn't me. There are a couple of CDorys that regularly fish out of Garibaldi. A gent named Joe Meagher has Mar's Magic (22 Angler) in a slip here.

I am not sure that I've seen Habanero here. There are several Gradys in the harbor.

Yes, it is Mar's Magic. I could not recall the vessel's name. The only reason I asked is because Habanero is owned by my step-father. He and Mar's owner fish and crab together but, I have never met him.
