St. John River

Hello All:

I am considering a early November cruise on the St. John - I have been looking at guide books on Amazon-will someone who has cruised the St. John recommend a book to get my planning started-Thinking I will cruise North and put the boat in at Lake Sanford.

Tracy & I have spent two weeks on the St John's River in the last year and we love the River. I would suggest putting in at Astor Landing Marina, they have two ramps on our first trip, we stayed there the first and last nights with power and stored truck and trailer for a week and they only charged $32.00.
It is in the sticks, but there is a restaurant about three miles N by water. If you go South all the way to Sanford on Lake Monroe, everything is closed on Monday & Tuesday ,and the marina is expensive.
We love Silver Glenn Springs on Lake George, and there are free town docks at Welaka, and a beautiful wooden boat museum. Don't stop at the Astor Bridge Marina & Bar, restroom's for boater's is shared by the Bar. Also the Crystal Cove Marina, famous seafood Resturant, which is in their ads has moved , restrooms and shower's were very primitive.
If you have any questions just let us know we tryed to nose into as many creeks and lakes as we could, we just got back from there.

We just got back from a road trip up to Orlando (universal studio's) We decided to take a side trip up through Sanford then all the way up to Palatka .We did stay in Astor at Castaways on rt 40 in Astor on the river what a neat area .I would love to do a St John's trip probably either april -may or oct -dec .There are 3 maps of the St John's river system The northern one takes you from Palatka -atlantic ocean ,Middle takes you from Lake Dextor through lake George then up to Palatka ,Southern one takes you from lake harney -lake monroe -to lake dexter.keep me informed we have a cc23 jim on jennykatz
 
Having just moved from the Sanford area and spent two years on the river with my ranger tug, let me hit a couple of items. 1) Boating and Cruising Guide to the St. Johns River by Tom Kranz is a great guide with all the info. you will need. I got my copy at the Sanford City Marina. 2) I feel that you will miss some of the best part of the river if you do not cover the part between Sanford and Astor. It is nice from Astor to Palatka and then get wider from there to Jacksonville. You can not go wrong on covering any part but to me the part before Astor is more of the old Florida and stepping back in time.
Have a great trip and as good as the Tennessee River is for my current waterway I still enjoyed the St. Johns better than anywhere I have cruised.
Ron With the Tenn. I just picked up an '85 classic C-Dory and am trying to sell my Ranger Tug. Wefings had the C-Dory and will have the tug.
