South Florida Loop

Behind again on posting details about this trip. Oh, well. Life is relaxed in the keys!

The weather continues to be fabulous. Gorgeous. Amazing. Perfect. Casey did this trip in 2010 and it was bitterly cold. I'm so happy its been warm this time around. It may change but so far, we've had a couple of incredible weeks.

Bahia Honda State Park marina was the most expensive marina we've stayed at so far on this trip (that will change when we get to Key West!). But at $2/foot it was very nice. Showers were a bit of a walk but were clean, hot and had great pressure. There was a beautiful beach (the only natural sand beach in the keys), a nice lagoon for the boats to tie up around (as opposed to the old half docks at Pennecamp), no bugs, fabulous ice cream cones, and the best part is that my young cousin is the naturalist there and took us home with her (to No Name Key) for dinner. Her boyfriend (who could be a chef) grilled up a WONDERFUL whole mutton snapper he had just caught and it was a delightful and delicious evening.

This photo is of Bahia Honda with the historic railroad bridge in the background: IMG_9935-M.jpg

The next night was on Ramrod Key tied up behind our friend Linda's house...in fact, this is our third night there. First night: catching up with Linda and then dinner of excellent pizza at the famous No Name Pub near No Name Key (but actually on Big Pine Key). Awesome place with thousands of dollar bills on every surface. Fun enough that Casey bought the T-shirt.

Second day: we dropped Linda at her job and used her truck to bum around Key West for 9 hours until it was time to pick her up again. We drove around NAS Key West Sigsbee stopping at the commissary and the exchange. And drove out to the marina at NAS KW Boca Chica to scout out options for our boat trip farther south. We were pleasantly surprised that they (currently) have lots of space and its only $1/foot for retired military. (So we will be probably be staying there tomorrow or the next day). We then did the mandatory touristy Key West stuff - watched the sunset on Mallory Square, had drinks and dessert at a wonderful Cuban place called El Meson de Pepe (beautiful garden setting decorated with lights), and then walked Duval Street. We slept very well!

Third day (today): another gorgeous day. The morning was slightly cooler and the locals called it "cold". (It was 70 degrees). We went snorkeling and I watched Linda and Casey dive down and catch about 15 lobster. (I watched because I didn't have a fishing license...plus it was a lot easier :) ). Only five were large enough to keep but hey, five lobsters made a great supper!

After snorkeling, Casey drove into Marathon to check out those binoculars and I went back out with Linda on her 19' Boston Whaler for an awesome mangrove tour ... FAST and lots of fun.

Over the last few days we've visited, done our laundry, played hard, and eaten VERY well. Tomorrow we plan to head out and continue on south toward Key West. Not sure if we will make it down to Boca Chica tomorrow night or if we will find a little nook somewhere to anchor in for a cozy evening, just the two of us, for some rest and the ultimate relaxation we seem to find only when anchored out.

Casey here....

Yea, a few days at Ramrod Key has been fun. We will probably be underway sometime later today headed for Boca Chica Marina at NAS Key West. The marina is about six miles from 'town, and with no convenient transportation, getting into downtown is a bit of an issue unless you rent a car. As a result we may go into the Galleon Marina which is RIGHT downtown. When we were in KW on Wednesday we stopped at Galleon to check the availability of moorage etc. At $3.50/ft it's more than we 'like, but hey ... it's Key West. (When we departed Boot Key Harbor [Marathon] while fueling, and learned that they charged $7.50/ft for dockside moorage. Amazing ... and no, we didn't linger.) ...but I digress.

Anyway, the forecast calls for the breeze to "freshening" from the E/SE for the next few days, but for now that will give us a quartering following sea to Boca Chica. Once in Key West we will probably stay at Galleon Marina for a couple of days and do the whole KW-tourist-thing (Hemingway House, trolley train, Mallory sunset, etc). (Who knows ... we may even stop at WM and look at those Fujinon Stabilized bino's [again].) :-)

(If you haven't read the Fujinon Stabilized bino thread - look at it. These would be a Major item of "boat jewelry"; but hey, it's Christmas, right?)

Meanwhile ... here we are on the canal at Ramrod Key (about 26miles north of KW) having morning coffee. Dinner last night was FL spiny lobster caught yesterday afternoon. I was a little concerned about not having a fishing license until our friend Linda (retired NPS boat captain) advised that wasn't a problem. Since I'm over-65, and a FL resident, all I need is a driver's license, not a fishing license. As it turned out, we 'only got five "keepers," (limit is 6/diver/day) ... but they certainly made a FINE dinner!

Life isn't good ... it's GREAT!

Best,
Casey&Mary

If you folks have time in Key West, I would recommend two restaurants. The first is 7 Fish reservations requested 305 296 2777 a tiny place but great food and service. The second is the Turtle Kraals restaurant which is near the schooner wharf area. I had a Mahi lemon picante sort of dinner there last year with Joefish and my wife. Can't get it out of my mind good stuff fun place. Merry Christmas

I'll add one I like: B & O Fishwagon. Extremely casual (roof and walls are optional), and, conveniently, right across from West Marine! (Presuming neither have moved in a couple of years.) Now I want the binoculars and an order of fish and chips.

Merry Christmas to All !

We are at Knights Key (south end of Marathon at the seven mile bridge).

There was finally a break in the wind so we headed back up the Keys to Marathon to position ourselves for our eventual crossing of Florida Bay to Florida's west coast.

The trip from Ramrod Key was delightful. We were about two hours ahead of a front coming through (it was easy to see the front on the iPad using Garmin's premium weather feature). With frontal passage the north winds kicked-up and have continued through the afternoon and all night. The forecast calls for continued winds for a few days, so we'll just watch and wait-as-necessary before heading across Florida Bay and the west coast.

Yesterday Tom and Joyce (CD22 Out2C) and Tom and Marlyn (CD25 Traveler) arrived and launched. They each got a mooring ball in Boot Key Harbor, so we rafted together for "happy hour" before Dessert 1st returned to Knights Key. A great evening, and a fun Christmas Eve.

We ended up spending a week on Ramrod Key at a friend's dock ... it was great! On Sunday we walked out to Hwy 1 and caught the Keys shuttle bus to KW. (Hopefully Mary will give a fuller account of the bus trip and our KW Adventure - but suffice to say, it was fun.) We spent two days at "Fly Navy" (a Navy hotel fairly close to downtown). Naturally, we did the compulsory Sunset-at-Mallory which is always fun, if a bit Crazy. (Dominique and his cats are still performing, but we think Dominique has migrated into a different mental universe. Stranger than usual ... and for KW, that's Amazing.)

Naturally we visited the new West Marine store which is now closer to the Ft. Myer's Ferry dock. WM already had a large store, but the new location is about 50% larger!

The Knights Key RV Park cafe will open for breakfast shortly, and rumor has it that my Captain has offered to buy breakfast! ...I'm outta here! :-)

Life is GREAT! MERRY CHRISTMAS !!

Best,
Casey&Mary

Casey,

Here's a link to my trip up the west coast of Florida from the Keys:

Tom, I absolutely loved reading the account of your amazing Everglades kayaking trip. It would sound really fun if only I could get past the 31 mile paddling day, continually fighting the tides and the strong headwinds, the 3 foot waves breaking over the deck, the heavy dew, the rain, waking up in a puddle with all your belongings soaked, and the "truly horrendous" mosquitos and no-see-ums. Other than that, it sounds peachy!

Seriously, I loved your journal. I read it twice and looked at your photos. I would love the owls, dolphin, alligators, manatee, the shark and the huge fish. but your trip certainly makes me appreciate the luxurious comfort we have on our spacious 23' Cape Cruiser. It's all relative, isn't it?

Reading Smitty's accounts of his C-Dory and kayak cruising in the St. John's area were the capper in putting it on my "must do" list. Great accounts and photos.

And of course I really enjoy the updates from Dessert 1st too! So fun to follow along :thup

We haven't been very good at posting here to keep everyone up to date on our trip. But it has been amazing and we will try to get caught up with more details when we get home... which may be later today as we spent last night at the Franklin Locks Army Corp of Engineers campground/marina ($12/night with the geezer pass), and will be heading up the Caloosahatchee this morning after our showers.

Instead of the "South Florida Loop", we may rename this our "Sunrise/Sunset' trip as we have never seen such spectacular sunrises and sunsets...day after day.

This one was from yesterday morning:

But as the saying goes, "Red sky in the morning....." and as the front went through our incredibly warm weather went with it. We had fabulous weather in Naples in the high 70's and 80's and after the front passed yesterday, temps were in the 60's during the day and last night here at Franklin Locks, it was 48. Burrr. Suppose to be back up in the 70's today but with some wind and possibly rain. So, sadly, time to pull out and head home. But we'll be back. And soon hopefully as there is still a lot of exploring left to do.

If you want to see more photos, check out our link here. The manatees sure posed nicely for us at Knight's Key! http://caseyandmary.smugmug.com/organiz ... orida-Loop

Hi Mary & Casey,

Thank you for sharing your travels with us. It's -10 deg at the moment here in MT and we are dreaming of the south FL loop and Key West. Your photos are fantastic. We hope you will continue to post your travel journals and beautiful sunsets.

Safe Travels,
Kevin & Laura

Dessert 1st is back at home in The Villages.

After a excellent trip on the South Florida Loop, we're back home. When we made the (very rough) trip on the outside from Naples to Ft. Meyers the forecast was for another front to come through, with much colder temperatures and a lot more wind (part of the big winter storm that engulfed the rest of the country). We had planned to spend another week exploring in the Ft. Meyers area (Mary's old boating grounds...), but we reconsidered and decided to continue on up the Caloosahatchee River to The Glades RV Resort in Moore Haven (FL) where truck and trailer were stored. We will save Ft Meyers for another trip.

On the way back we stayed one night enroute at the Franklin Lock Marina (a Corp of Engineer dock and campground), then hauled-out on Saturday and drove back to The Villages.

Total mileage for the trip was 645sm, with 99 engine hours (...yea, we usually cruise at displacement speed). It was a Great trip.

Yesterday was devoted to cleaning out the boat and getting it ready for the next Adventure!

Best,
Casey&Mary
