Source for Teak

I would like to get some teak wood to make some small cabinet doors...maybe 3 doors that are 11" x 18.5" by 0.75". Also a trim strip maybe 3/8" or 1/2" by 2" by 6 feet to hang curtain hardware.

Is there a good source for this wood? Thanks.

When we lived in the S.F. Bay Area, we had several local sources of teak and all kinds of other exotic wood building materials because of the proximity of the marine building and repair industry there.

It was also desirable and important to be able to go into the store / lumber yard (indoor) and pick out each piece of wood for grain pattern, quality, and size to avoid unnecessary waste of expensive wood.

So I'd first suggest you look to find a local source, if you can. Any local lumber company will be able to direct you to the closest alternate source if they do not stock the marine grade wood of your choice.

I've also bought some pieces of teak veneered marine grade mahogany backed plywood on ebay that were small but very usable that came as left-over cut-off stock from custom boat manufacturers.

If all else fails, try Google!

You want to find a local hardwood supply house. There aren't a huge
number around. They cater to people doing custom woodwork
for homes, etc. The place I go carries perhaps 20-30 hardwoods
in the rough. They will surface two sides for free, and a third for
a minimal charge.

I will say that they have decided to only mill teak twice a month because
it causes excessive wear on their planer and jointer blades. This is
one reason I ended up with Brazillian Cherry. Also, teak is around
$20/ft and the Cherry, $5, I think.

Cool places to go...you should get to know one if you like working in
hardwood. So much cheaper than buying surfaced four sided oak
at Home Depot.

just a odd story that fits here. a friend of my brother is building a large sail boat in the coos bay area. The guy is really a craftsman and a cheap bastard. Well one day he's down by the commerial docks and looking for pallets to use as fire wood for his shop. He came across a stack of pallets that were different. they were all made of teak. The pallets came from over seas some were and where sitting there in the scrap pile. he took all 300 of them home and used the wood on his boat. A lot of it he surfaced and sold on ebay and other placed for a mint. He kept a look out for more pallets but none ever showed up after that one load. Some time you just get luck.
 
My father had an almost 'endless' supply of teak--his brother was in the millitary and stationed several times in the orient. Each time, all of his shipping crates were made of solid teak.

Check with area boat builders and carpenters. Often they will have some extra teak they will sell, or can add what you need when thier order is delivered.
