SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

I re-oiled the teak on Navicula yesterday whilst I was on board pondering fuel tank replacement. I sure am glad there's not much wood on a C-Dory...

Good luck with the knee surgery, Charlie! If you are hankering for a cruise this fall or winter after you're up and around, just give me a call - the Otter goes all winter. (BTW - I owe you some pictures of Captains Choice - will send them along now that our DSL is working again.)

Gave Otter a thorough cleaning after her long trip up north, replaced both batteries, and made an appointment at Cutter Marine for some overdue maintenance at the end of October. Needs some body work on the rub rail at the bow, an engine service, and am thinking of installing a second bilge pump at the stern. Am looking forward to some time in home waters this weekend.

Today I hooked C-Dawg-E up to the RV and prepared to head N away from ivan . . . I've got both RV and CD full of water and food if the worst should happen (and 40 gallons of gas in cans). The stations are already running out of fuel here (40 miles N of Tampa), plywood, etc., is gone. I figure I'll head out Sunday morning around 3 am for the Fla/Ga line.

Adios . . .

PS: Just had to come back and add this before leaving (was to some other Floridians):

Gene, John, Harold, etc.,

My neighbor, a real he-man facing up the Gulf same as me, decided to ride out Francis -- "just a little one, nuthin but a windstorm . . ." Anyway, tonight I was out back picking up some debris from the yard and he yelled over if I had any leaks (got some roof tiles loosened) and I told him I had some water blow sideways under the door but hadn't found any water on that (his side) corner of the house. I asked him if he'd seen any other tiles loose or flapping in the storm. Nope. I wished him well and said offhandedly, "well, all we have to do now is get through this next one." He immediately started shouting "I AIN'T STAYING, I AIN'T STAYING!" almost as if someone was going to make him stay. I thought it was funny and couldn't help but chuckle as I rounded the house out of sight, as he was such a brave man before that hurricane . . . so, add one more traumatized chicken heading for Georgia (behind me).

Flagold: Head north, keep your head down and your powder dry. good luck, let us know how you do.

Tom on Otter: I also owe you a CD which I have made and ready to go with all the Pix from the June get together. Send me a PM or e-mail with a snail mail address and I'll get it off. thanks for the good wishes about the surgery, I'm really actually looking forward to it, rest, relaxation, drugs, etc....Sounds like you guys had a great trip up north, great pix, stories, etc. Maybe we'll do it together one year...Sally and I send our best to your and your great family. Andy says Hi to both pooches!!

Charlie,

Just noticed you plan for a new knee. Be a good kid and do what the doc sez -- got neighbors who didn't and should have.

Best wishes for rapid and full recovery, and scotch beats drugs any day.

Charlie,

Good luck on the knee replacement surgery. Biggest thing is to be consistant on the therapy. I had both of mine done in June of '98 (thats 1998 not 1898). I had therapy for about 4 weeks after the replacements, after which I just followed thru with self administered therapy/exercises at home. Knees are great and a new lease on life.

You'll love it!

What's up with this thread?? Used to be #1, now it's down around 173 or so.

I learned something today. Probably the only guy in the world who didn't know it, but I'm glad I learned it when I did.

There is a special hose for sanitary use. It is made so the contents will not permeate the cover and stink up the boat. That's kinda handy, I think.

One of the projects this winter is to redo the freshwater plumbing on the TyBoo. There are two freshwater tanks on the port side, one under each dinette seat. Well, there used to be. Now the both of them are under the rear seat. And the water heater still fits there! I had to relocate the fill spout for the former front tank and set it on its side to fit them both in. I made a plastic gizmo to attach the hose connection to the tank in the new spot. I wanted it out from under the front seat so I can make the seat reversible one of these days.

So, I needed some hose to reconnect the hull fill fitting and also to replumb the macerator pump (which was in the way). I told the guy at the marine store to give me enough 1 1/2" hose for the whole works, and some 1" hose for the macerator discharge. When I picked up a short chunk of the 1" and mentioned that was the style already on there, he pointed out that it was for sanitary use and explained why. So, I learned in time to get the right stuff for the macerator suction line from the holding tank, too. Kay and the girls would have raised a big stink if I had used the other stuff.

Another thing Kay is making me do is plumb hot water to the galley sink. It has it's own tank on the starboard side for cold water, and I use an electric pump to run the water through a filter to the spigot. Now I have to get another filter unit from Home D to mount on the other side of the boat under the seat and run the cold feed to the water heater through it, and tap into the hot side with a hose to the galley. The filter unit is a wall mount inline type with a replaceable element. If I open both valves at the sink, and have two pressure pumps feeding it, Kay should be able to fill up that 28 cup coffee pot in nothing flat. Plus, she will have filtered hot water running to the shower.

None of this helps the fishing, but it sure makes Kay happy at the dock.

HI ALL
I FINALLY MADE IT BACK HOME TO OREGON AND MY BOAT!!
I WENT DOWN TO CHECK THE STORAGE YARD WHERE WE LIVE AND ACTUALLY GOT ON TO THE STIMPY TODAY.
IT HAS BEEN WAYYYYYY TO LONG SINCE I HAVE EVEN BEEN NEAR THE BOAT, 117 DAYS OUT OF 142 WORKING. THERE IS MUCH THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO GET THE BOAT READY.
I HOPE TO HAVE HER READY TO DO A LOCAL LAUNCH AND CHECK OUT TRIP SUNDAY. MIKE IF I GET IT ON THE WATER I WILL POST A PICTURE SO THAT YOU WILL KNOW THE THE OLD HULL STILL WILL FLOAT. WORKING SO MUCH MAKES GOOD $ BUT I'M BEGINNING TO WONDER IF IT IS REALLY WORTH ------------- !!
DOES ANY ONE HAVE A SPORT PILOT PLUS AUTOHELM INSTALLED ON A 22' ? I NEED INPUT ON THAT UNIT.
REGARDS, DOUG AKA STIMPY'S DAD :beer :beer

Welcome back to the center universe Doug. I was beginning to wonder if you had forgotten about the pub.

I got me some more sticks that I've been whittlin on. I'm going to screw and glue a piece of 3/4 x 2 to the funky built in step in the cockpit. I'm going to hinge a piece of 3/4 x 13 x 8 off the screwed and glue piece. Folded down, It will partially rest on the step and give me a larger landing pad when boarding plus a place to rest a cheek while fishing. It will fold up and out of the way when not in use. If this thing works out, I'm going to get me a chunk of that fake 2x4 composite deck material and rebuild it bigger and beefier

Ken, you'll love your new steps. I did the same, only without the hinge, which sounds great. Suggest you prime with outdoor primer, then coat with sand grit tennis court/pool side paint available from Lowes, on the cheap. Lasts well, with only annual touch up required, particularly if you round the sharp edges.

Ken- Nice idea about the fold down step. Getting it up out of the way will be nice.

I faced much the same problem back a few years ago and solved it with a plastic step stool. This gives a two step answer to the basic problem, and makes stepping up onto the gunnel to go forward to the bow a breeze. ( I had noticed that after a day or two of taking the relatively big step from the low built-in step up to the gunnel to go forward to the bow for anchor tending, my knees were giving me big trouble.) The stool can also be moved from side to side or positioned anywhere else in the cockpit for seating, or can be tossed into the motor well out of the way. But the great advantage of dividing the step up into two smaller units was a real unexpected major improvement that made this into one of those cheap gizmos that works so good I just can't be without it. Joe.

Been going crazy, haven't been on the boat in 2 months. Gotta go!!!
Left the harbor Saturday A.M. in great weather. Made the crossing over to Platts Harbor on Santa Cruz Island. Great weather, 80 f degrees, slight wind. Drifted for halibut, no takers. Started working the boiler rocks for calicos, C&R several nice cali's. Worked our way down island, couldn't get the halibut to bite but had fun with the bass. Last stop was in the gap for some nice reds, again C&R. Headed back to the harbor as the sun was setting.
Heard that while we had a great day at the Island, the harbor was pounded with 30+ winds. It was great to get back on the water.

Roger, sounds like a fine day of hydro thearpy.
The pool paint sounds like a good way to go but, I just happen to have some house paint left over that's just right shade of white. I also had a roll of white no-skid tape that needed using up. This was one of those kick around the garrage, use up the left overs, kind of projects. I'm wishing I had some sturdier lumber in the left over pile, I installed one step, and I can see where it is a bit on the flimsey side for my likens.
The step stool idea is a fine one, twood sure be better than the controled crash that occurs now trying to get in the boat with any stuff in your arms.

I put a set of these in Captain's Choice after the first mate complained about the distance to the step. They're a little pricey but very convenient and sturdy. I got a set at West Marine and installed brackets on each side of the cockpit near the cabin. You can use the cabin as a hand hold getting in and out as usual and they don't interfere with the step that's already there. They store on the v-berth when not in use.

Hi, C-Brats

We are leaving Utah on Dec. 26th for our annual winter trek with the TomCat, Cygnet. Spent the last two winters in Baja Mexico and need a change this year. Going to spend 2 1/2 months on the Gulf Coast. Will start in the South Padre Is. area of Texas and work our way East toward Louisiana and possibly on to Florida.

Planning to fish the Mississippi Delta out of Venice Louisiana for Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo during late Jan. into Feb. Hoping to meet up with Jim (Pounder) who is flying in at that time for a Tuna charter. Also will meet up with Byrdman (Freebyrd) if possible.

Any other C-Brats going to be on the Gulf this winter? Hope to meet up with new friends.

We travel in a Ford F450/Lance camper combination and tow the TomCat. Have traveled over 13,000 miles so far with the Camper and TomCat (on two different trucks).

Have a new Verizon mobile office set up and plan to keep in touch via web while on the road.

Brent and Dixie
