SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

I bought a cooler rack from the factory and installed it yesterday. Here's pics of the factory cooler rack, courtesy of Pete from Adeline taken at the Portland Sportsman's Show a couple of years ago.

I'm excited to get the cooler off the floor, especially while fishing. It has however opened up a can of worms so to speak. I had to remove the transom bar and the dinghy motor mount I fashioned along with it. So now I don't have a rail to mount my filet table and a mount for my dinghy motor. Oh well, back to the drawing board. :cry

I notice the factory style cooler rack has the cooler mounted half in front of the motor well and half back into it, instead of all back into the motor well with the front flush with the end of the cockpit. This still gives you full access to the floor space in the cockpit for your feet, but puts the cooler forward enough that the motor can be titled up with the cooler left in place. This is the way I designed mine, although I have never before seen the factory set up.

Been thinking about a radar reflector for some time but balked at the $50+ for a little aluminum so decided to make my own. Success for less than $10. Cut out mockup from scrap cardboard, bought a little thin aluminum from local sheetmetal shop and had them cut it into three 10" circles ($2), cut slots with bandsaw, used JB weld to secure pieces, painted with scrap paint, mounted with Stainless Steel mini bungees from West Marine ($6). Here's the mockup and finished product:

Its a safety thing, I like to be as visible as possible to the big guys and the tugs, plus, we occasionally are out in the fog (usually not on purpose) or at night and we spend a lot of time in Canada; they require radar reflectors if your boat is in their waters for 30 consecutive days.

So, I figure its a very small investment for some improvement in being seen.

Barry,
Nice idea, I have been thinking it would be worth having one but, like you balked at the $50+ .
Did you get the 10" dimension from the WM Factory type reflector, or was that your own size?
Just wondering if there is a size requirement for that Canadian reg you mentioned.
Thanks,
Harvey

editied to keep from running all across the neighborhood

Harv,

The 10" was determined by what would fit into the tall radar arch, (see pix). It is a little smaller than some commercial ones, larger than some others. I don't know of any particular size requirements for the Canadian Coast Guard. There are several different reflector designs available, different shapes. I know this one works. The mounting location is not ideal but is my best available compromise. Ideally I'd mount it on top of the radome at the highest point on the boat and out of the radar beam/sidelobes but that is not practical for me. After talking with Raymarine I am confident that the present mounting location is not interfering with my radar. I figure I get substantially enhanced echoes over about 250 degrees and probably some improvement over the remaining 110 as the fiberglass of the roof is not completely opaque to radar. It was really quite simple to make.

In the water today :thup And out :crook Seems the boat trims bow down now even with the tanks full :disgust I went to move the trim pin on the engine and it was locked into place :cry I had to go back onto the trailer and come home. Aside from a little corrosion I had to loosen the motor mount bolts to take the pin out of a bind :smilep I'm going to tighten the mounts back up and put the tilt pin in the lathe for a little trim job. :wink Hopefully back in the water tomorrow. :smiled Jack

Loaded, loaded and loaded some more stuff into the boat. It will be a miracle if it floats off the trailer in Telegraph Cove, BC tomorrow night.

Catching the early Coho ferry tomorrow morning. By weeks end, we'll be a group of 8 Brats on Dreamer, Sea Pal, Cast Away and Kingfisher II. We'll listen for Dr. Bob an a week or two. Any other Brats in the Broughtons can hail us on 16.

We have had a great weekend out at Matia...to Birch Bay Friday night, out Saturday about 1:00 p.m., after a bunch of running around. GLORIOUS weather both Saturday and Sunday. Anchored up in Matia Cove, one other boat there, a Bayliner, chatted a bit. Rowed the dink from Matia Cove to Rolfe Cove and back, Patty says "never again." I say I need a better handheld VHF - I could hear her calling, she could not hear me reply! Baxter loved the voyage in the dink! Decided to stay out another night, so we came back to Chuckanut Bay, have a weak wireless signal floating over the water here...will get back to Hilton Harbor tomorrow early, and scoot home. Will go in to work late so I can leave early! Just a fabulous weekend!!!!

Sounds to me that you ought to be able to fix that handheld VHF with a tire iron.....

Glad you had a great weekend.....oh, and Happy Father's Day! :thup

Now that I've got the boat back in the water my wife has me chasing down "errant " crab pot floats for yard decorations, every time she sees one floating down the channel. :smilep Darn! :sad Another excuse to use the boat :wink ... :smiled Jack

Is your present handheld VHF for sale? I could use one like that for Mary when she goes off on her own....
