I have a small fleet of canoes and kayaks that I want to keep insured against theft and fire loss. My insurer, State Farm, insists on a policy for each boat, and of course it has to include liability. It's a PIA. All I want is insurance against loss.

Is anyone aware of an insurance company that will write a single policy that lists and insures each watercraft that a person wants covered?

Thanks in Advance,

Steve

hi steve,
are you using these items commercially? how many units do you have and what is the total value of all units

Hi Pat,

I have 3 kayaks (2 singles and a double) and 3 canoes (2 doubles and a solo). Replacement value of the kayaks are $1500 each for the singles and $2000 for the double. The Canoes are probably around $600 each to replace.

I'd check your homeowners policy and call that insurer and see if you have coverage there or could put a rider on your policy to do so.

Charlie,

State Farm has to write an individual policy for each boat. I want an umbrella for all of the boats that are listed under a policy.

My perception is that State Farm is so locked into tradition, they are unhampered by progress.

Job security for the underwriters and mailroom.

hi steve,
i've checked with progressive insurance co, boat division for the state of oregon, (1-877-776-2436) they do not have a product for boats without engines.
charlie gives very good advice, check with any insurance company that issues homeowners insurance. generally all home owners policy extend limited coverage to watercraft, including their trailers, whether licensed or not, furnishings, equipment and outboard motors. there is a limit on size of boat and hp of engine. maximum coverage is approx $2000. per loss. so, how many boats are you going to have on the water at one time?
look in your policy under special limits, personal property. liability is extended from the homeowners policy when the boat qualifies for coverage. look for restriction to loa, and size of engine, if any. don't stop at state farms door, there are many other fine carries willing to take your business.
hopes this helps.
best regards
pat
