I will be new to NW boating this summer. How is Sirius satellite weather service up the Inside Passage to Skagway/Sitka? Thanks. Norb

I don't have Sirius however, I do subscribe to XM and I believe they are very simular. Last summer we cruised from Blaine, Wa to Elfin Cove, AK. and I found it very useful when you are in the US.

Canadian weather was not available unless you have internet access. Most ports do have WIFI and I used the following website:

http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/marine/r ... l?mapID=02

With my plotter and XM weather I was able to view many weather buoys and current conditions.

The thing I liked about XM is I can suspend the weather subscription, during the off season, and still maintain the radio/entertainment service at the discounted rate of $6/mo.

The main reason I got it originally was to view sea surface temps while tuna fishing on the west coast.

From the Sirius Weather FAQ:

SIRIUS Marine Weather subscribers are able to receive SIRIUS Marine Weather from anywhere within SIRIUS's satellite footprint, which blankets the 48 contiguous states, and international waters extending hundreds of miles into the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.

So Sirius gives you weather coverage of more than just the US. I am not sure what the difference would be between Sirius and Canadian weather forecasts.

How did you get it for $6/mo.? The best I got was $10/mo by paying for a year at a time. So I only got it for the two months that we were on the road and then dropped it. I would buy it for $6

Roger;

When you sign up for weather service any additional subscriptions for audio are $6/mo each. I use the weather service during the summer months then suspend the weather service for the other 9 mos. and they still only charge $6/mo for audio service.

Thanks for the informatin Gene. I'll look into that.
