I don't know who may be interested, but if so I placed a recent picture of one pull in the cockpit and accessory album. It is on the last page next to anothers Ace Puller. Ve take vary few pictures so our own album woud be a waste but I thought this nice picture might be interesting to some.
The tote is 10 inches off the bottom from a 30 gallon poly drum so I'm gussing probably 4 gallons of hole shrimps in there. We did this 3 times last time out!

Don’t yea love PWS Rambo Spot shrimp, we’re headed out this weekend again perhaps all the way (75 miles) out to Montague if the weather stays good. We’ll probable drop and pick pots 3 times, been getting about 3 to 4 gal per pick with 4 pots, good enough for us.

My son likes to set aside the Granddads has he calls them, picture taken last year. Seems the shrimp are even bigger this year.

I pull with buoy, 4 pots on one line.
Could you please explain the method? We pulled 3 pots by hand a couple of weeks ago and it sure convinced Caryn and I to invest in a pot puller. :teeth

This is what I use: http://www.orvalsezpull.com/

It’s the same as pulling your anchor with a buoy. There are a lot of different buoy pullers on the market but the Orval’s ez pull in my opinion works the best because you can just snap it on the line and pull off when it gets to the pots. And if you stop pulling the pots don’t sink again because the line won't reverse.

We grab the buoy attached to the pots, tie off to stern cleat, pull in some more line and attach buoy puller with buoy large enough to lift your pots, drop it over and move out-4.5 to 5.5 mph; the buoy will start feeding back. When the buoy starts to bob it’s reached the first pot.
At this point you can either back down the line while someone pulls it in, or circle around to the buoy and pull the line in from there-that’s what we do.
Advanced deep water method:
When the buoy puller is about 25% down the line turn around and pull in the opposite direction-make sure if the lines is on the port side you turn to port or line in the prop…yea!--. When you make the turn speed up so the pots don’t drop too much. When you get to the other side you’ll notice the pot puller is feeding back like no tomorrow-remember to slow back down here or you could warp the pots and lose some contents-. The reason this works is your now pulling into the pots that are almost at the surface.

That’s about it, worked for us all last season, and about 15 pulls this year.
like the KISS philosophy…

Wow, thanks Jay! That makes sense to me. I've been reading about using these buoy systems for pulling the anchor but never thought about using it to pull pots. :thup :thup

I just thought of another question. This kind of anchor retrieval system won't work on an anchor with chain, correct? I would have to get the system with the ring retrieval in order for it to slide over the chain. Does that sound right?

Anchor Ring System

Peter,

We used system like that anchoring in 100+ ft off the "other" coast in the days when you could still catch real Cod. As long as you are careful it works like a charm. Watch out if your anchor is fouled.

Jazzmanic,
You need chain to counter act the weight of your anchor as its pulled up thru the ring. If you don't have enough chain the anchor will go back down when you slack off. Does this make sense??

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks Nunya. I was wondering if the anchor would slip back down when slackened but it makes sense that the chain would counterbalance it. So the ring will work with chain and the anchor won't slide back down. That works for me. What a great site!

I'm thinking about spending the $70 for this type of system before looking into one of them fancy windlass things. :wink

only problem with the buoy system around here is the other 400 pots all around you. You could not use that set up very well ,if at all, in the sound with out getting crossed up in other peoples pots. Just to many pots around to take off driving and dragging 400 ft of line. Now if you are away from folks and have the room thats great but with our 4 to 6 day season over two to three weeks- good luck.

oh I have one like it , different brand, for anchoring out for salmon and sturgean. I just have not had the chance to use it in a while. They are great for that. there are several videos on the market all about how to anchor and how not to anchor on the river. Its a good cut into the learning curve, in fact I think I own one. I will have to go look for it.
