Shrimp pots - must buy tomorrow - Mackey or Ladner?????

I had four onboard, fished 3 pots, and got all of ours on the first pull. It was a nice day for shrimping for a change, this year. Tomorrow is going to be even better.

so marine area 7 south is open daily until may 21st this year. 6 and 7 west are open daily until quote is reached, which has been some time in late august. Thats a pretty good season.

Thanks all for the input! Here's what I did.....

I went with the McKay style pot (mine are made by SMI and I purchased them at Holiday sports on a 20% off deal which made each 30" pot about $100). I liked the stacking ability of the Ladners, but in the final analysis, I decided rigid square pots will work best on my boat. I do not plan on using more than 2 pots. If I ever were to go with 4 pots, the Ladners might have got the edge.

Being a neophite, it took me 2 days EACH to configure the pots with lines, weights, buoys. Much of that time was spent learning to splice loops in the ends of 5/16" weighted line. I have never spliced before, having avoided it like the plague, but I've always wanted to know how to do it. The small diameter, incredibly tight, stiff, and waxy line was not the best to start with, but believe me, once I had done 10 of those splices with that line, I now have splices nailed!!

The pots weigh 18 pounds, and I added 20 more pounds with #7 rebar encased in PVC schedule 40 pipe. I also add a 10 pound weigh up the line about 10-15' from the pot. So each pot+weight weighs about 50 pounds loaded and ready to dump in the water.

I didn't get my boat back until Friday 5/5, so I missed opening day. But I was out there near Iceberg Point on Sunday for my first ever shrimping expedition. Absolutely gorgeous day with only a mild swell and nearly no wind. Best 1st time ever....I suspect I am forever spoiled now. BTW, got my limit on the first pull too....beginners luck no doubt.

I use the Ladner Traps in my 16' Fisherman, with a simple roller on the gunnel for hand pulling the line. :smile

Even though they nest, I've found 3 traps, a couple of buckets and me is all I have room for. :smilep

As for loosing prawns out of the bottom...You have to pay attention when you hook up the closure.:sad

I don't use weights in the traps and I drop the traps 1 hour before slack and retrieve them 1 hour after. :wink

The bait you use will make a world of difference. :thup

Your wife's old nylons, or cheap on sale panty hose.:smileo

Shake the bait down into the toe and tie it off in a ball, knot,
repeat. Then pin in the top of the trap with a large safety pin. :wink

I use the plastic bait holders; the taller ones. I think they are ~9" or so. Like this: https://johnssportinggoods.com/product/crabbing-shrimping/bait-barrel/ The commercial pots I use don't have a center bait tunnel, just two cords that + in the center of the pot. So I have to have a "container" of some kind. I did drill small holes top and bottom and re-enforce the lid/bottom with alum rivets. They are just "glued" from the manufacturer and I've had them come apart in the trap.

Did you drill holes in the pvc pipe? or did you leave the ends open??

I know what you are getting at. I worried about that. The #7 rebar nearly fills the PCV pipe, but there is air in there. I wanted to keep the water out because, altho I'm not sure I believe it, many have told me that shrimp don't like the "taste" of rusting steel and/or electrical currents. I figured schedule 40 pipe is very strong and would flex a bit. So far no signs of cracks or water intrusion down to about 300 feet.
