self bailing tunnels ?

Is there supposed to be 1 way valves inside the self bailing tunnel ?
I tested a beauty on the weekend but when we (3 people)
Stood by the transom to check out the kicker etc water kept coming in the self bailing holes ? Turned me off a bit about the purchase.

Hello.

Your terminology is a bit off, or you are not asking about a c-dory.

Tunnels are on the bottom of the boat, they are a scoop in the hull that pulls water up and allows your prop or jet to be raised to a higher position without cavitating.

C-Dories do not have tunnels.

If I had to guess I'd say you were asking about the splashwell in front of the motor with drain at the bottom. It is totally okay for this to fill with water. You need no one-way valve, nor do you need to plug the hole. It is just fine for the splashwell to take on water, it will drain just fine. The purpose of the splashwell is to contain the water that comes over the transom, keep your motor from getting swamped, and return that water to the water.

You can get worried if water starts coming over the splashwell and into the cockpit, but if that is happening you are likely doing something wrong and should stop doing that thing before you sink your boat.

I hope this helps. Please specify what your concerns are a little bit more clearly and you are sure to get a lot of good info on what to be worried about and what is normal.
 
If you were looking at a 22, it is not a self bailer. There is a drain from the splash well, and to my knowledge they are not valved. There is at least one, and sometimes 2 bilge pumps in the cockpit; one at the stern under the s[plash well, aft next to the transom, and/or there is one at the forward edge of the cockpit sole. It may be actually on the cockpit side of the aft cabin bulkhead, or it may be in the center, under a small step just forward of that bulkhead. OR there my be one in each position.

It would help to know what boat you were looking at: 16, 19, 22, 25 or one of the other versions, V-23 or V-26 or the TomCat.

Sorry first boat. The holes where in the aft end in front of the transits splash well . I hope this is the correct terminology
 
Many small boats will have water enter the self bailing cockpit scuppers. Bayliners and others have a rubber flap or ball on the transom and others are similar. Tomcats with a load will bring water in the cockpit and many owners fit the scupper flaps. Not a deal breaker if you like the boat. 3 folks way aft on a 22 with main and kicker and full fuel will depress the transom a lot. Most of us are running our boats heavier then designed and they all still float.
