seat installation

Hi fellow brats...I need some good info regarding installation of a deck seat that would be removable,my husband is 84 and he insists on sitting on cooler fish box because he always holds his pole waiting for a bite that may take 10 hours for halibut, that has got to be hard on his patoosh not to mention no backrest so for Christmas I've decided to surprise him with a captain.s chair with lots of cushioning(of course he may want to stay out and fish longer!) So do they make free standing seats that you just remove like on a driftboat or with the slanted bottom on a 22' angler would I have to install a base and remove it every time we swithch to crabbing or bottomfishing as the seat would be a nuisance? thanks for any input Sue

Boy, I sure don't know ......You need that ice chest for all the biggins you get...and that does not leave lots of moving around space... I would think you might get someone to build some sort of seat on top of the ice chest...and remove all that when you are crabbing but it would turn out to be a nuisance... you kinda need that empty space to move around..

I'd suggest that you buy a nice cushion for on the cooler and another one for a back rest. If you can position the cooler against the bulkhead wall, you can even install snaps on the bulkhead to hold up the back rest. Igloo makes some decent cushions for their coolers but I'd prefer to go with a closed cell foam one for longevity.

Sue- I don't know how much room you've got left in the cockpit, but I have one of the type of chairs shown below in the cockpit of my Sea Ray, and it's so comfortable I sometimes sleep in it, rather than going up to the V-berth. Folds up nicely, but does still take up some room. When I'm too old to go boating, I'm going to take it (or buy another) with me to the rest home. May even get buried or cremated in it. Did I mention that it is comfortable?

Lovely chair -- the trouble is you need a poop deck to mount it on-- 16'ers need every inch in the cockpit for essentials like a large tackle box and cooler. In my case I have a plastic milk crate which gives me "storage" for my flashers- release clips etc. with a nice soft fabricated lid I made to sit on.

I was suggesting the chair for wanna-be's CD-22 Angler, which has a cockpit that's 6 feet, 5 inches wide by 6 feet, 6 inches long, almost 42 square feet in total.

I know the chair would fit in my CD-22 Cruiser which is the same width, but only 4 feet 8 inches in length (approx. 30 square feet).

And yes, I suspect the chair would be a no-go on the CD-16 with ~ less than 20 square feet of cockpit space.

I have looked at those chairs for years....yes they are real comfy... and I think they only come in white... West Marine always stocks them...but they are expensive... the tubing is stainless steel and they are well built..fine chairs..
if they only built a rocking model I would buy one...

Joel    Try putting one on your boat. Through the magic of the water it becomes a rocking chair

Joel-

With your skills, you could design a set of curved wooden bottom rails to fit over the existing feet on the chair, making it into a rocker.*

Imagine setting in your new rocking chair at anchor as the waves pass under the boat, self-energizing the rocking motion, inducing you into a calming sleep.

How about adding an electric blanket for cool days and nights?

Nothing wrong with growing old gracefully, eh?

* With the full, natural motion of the boat at anchor, a rocking chair is really not needed, as the boat itself rolls through the waves, working the chair with it.

Stay warm in Carpinteria, it's freezing in Lake Almanor!

On a number of occasions I've lusted for a couple of Garelick folding seats for the boat. BUT, each time I look, after forgetting about them, I'm utterly outraged & disgusted with the asking price of these simple seats. Add in shipping & an immigrant family of 5 could live for 3 months!! But that's just me & you know how that goes!!! Ps, & the older I get the worse it gets!

We have two of these folding seats that came with our 19 and attached to the cabin bulkhead Joe built. They are neat but we do not use them the way we have the boat configured. I feel bad keeping them in storage but you never know when we might use the boat differently. They are very overpriced.

Joe. How much snow up there at Almanor? Went to school at Lassen college and lived upstairs in the Westwood fire dept for a couple of years in the early 70s. Cold country for sure.

I don't know if it helps, but Defender has the Garelick chairs, aluminum at $150, stainless at $220. That's cheaper that the West Marine chairs and probably better.

If the guy is 80, I suspect the aluminum would do.

Vern-

Looks like about 6-8 inches on the webcam right now, and still snowing.

I'm actually in Redding right now where our home is and it's raining profusely, and we're hoping to see and end to a 2 year drought.

We have a modular summer home in a resort on Lake Almanor that we use from May through early October.

Joel has a summer home at Lake Almanor, too.

Great place to spend the summers, but winters are lonely, cold, and depressing. Probably like exile in Siberia, in my "guesstimation"!

6 degrees in Susanville the other night, 22 here in Redding. Colder than usual for these climes. Still not Montana-like, though!

Stay warm!

Thanks Joe. Giad to hear some snow is accumulating. We're finally getting some much needed rain on the north coast. The Smith just got blown out on the last storm, first time in quite awhile. Steelhead starting to show also. we had a very poor ocean salmon season in C.City this year & now looking at a bleak crab season, especially, sport crab. Hoping for the best! Take care
