Sea Sport manufactured 22' cruiser

I posted this on the Seattle Boat Show thread but think some brats not looking at that thread may want to find out about the Sea Sport 22' C-Dory. So...

I didn't take pictures but looked over the Sea Sport built 22' pretty well. Here's my recollections.

Lazarette hatches are much smaller. Looks like you could just barely get a 24 series battery inside. The starboard lazarette is now sealed on the bottom. On my 2006 the aft 6 inches or so was open down to the area above the fuel tanks. I like the sealed lazarette and would either get larger hatches put in during construction or install larger ones after purchase.

Interior gelcoat paint is still speckled but has a much glossier appearance.

Dinette table is much changed. The surface is brown laminate with no raised lip and I don't much care for that but the table support is now a large telescoping cylinder (about 4-6" in diameter) that slides up and down so to convert the table to a bed you just need to unscrew the lock and slide it down. That eliminates the short support post we've all grown to "love". Much much stronger than the old style and much easier to use. Flipping the leg up and pulling the table off the wall to make up the bunk was a PITA on the old style. A disadvantage to this is that the cylinder now protrudes into the under table storage area. The support for the half of the table that folds down is also much improved. On the old style that half was supported by a barrel bolt that attached to the cabin wall. hard to latch and not great support. Now there is a sliding panel about 4-6" in width that extends from the fixed side of the table out about 6" under the folding side. Much stronger. A good fix that I will incorporate into C-Cakes.

Interior access hatches are very small, way too small and there is only a single tiny hatch to access the area under the dinette. That should be changed. They look like getting anything into or out of the various storage areas would be a PITA. Changing the hatches would really improve the boat.

The slanted storage area under the rear seat cushion is now gone. I'd really miss that. I keep spare prop, spare anchor, lines, emergency hull repair kit, etc. in that space and it is very important to me.

The under cooking area storage now extends from the front of the helm seat all the way back to the cabin bulkhead so you could put larger things in there, but...there are no shelves built in at all, its just a big open space. That opens up opportunities to customize but if you're not into that there is a lot of wasted space.

The helm seat is way better than the old factory design. I replaced the factory seat on C-Cakes a few years ago but this looks better enough that I may pull the aftermarket one out and install a Sea Sport factory version.

The wheel is now a tilt-wheel that looks like it would be a great change.

There is a center cabin light situated under the chart flat storage shelf at the front of the cabin area and there is a teak ring about 1" thick to which the overhead cabin lights are attached. Not sure why.

The slides for the "Barber" seat are wider and the barrel bolts that held it in place are gone. On reflection they were probably never necessary.

In the Vee-berth the porta-potti area is recessed further so a person could actually sit on it with the curtain closed and there is a fold down flap that hangs in front of the porta-potti so it is not visible all the time. The privacy curtain is now a pull-across curtain instead of the older split curtain with snaps, a better solution. There is a round hatch about 10" in diameter under the center mattress giving access to what looks like a pretty good-sized storage area obtained by removing some of the flotation that filled that void in the older design. That may make up for the loss of storage in the cabin. There is a hatch covering the anchor rode storage area. A nice addition that I will probably copy.

That's about all I can recollect. Others will undoubtedly see things I missed.

Thanks for the info. But,

How was the build quality? What motor did they use? How about the C-25?

Golly, I've got a lot of questions.

Thanks, Boris

Thanks for the comments. Anyone have a picture of the new helm chair Sea Sport is using? Is it the same one they use on the Sea Sport line?

I'm also interested in seeing any pictures of the dinette setup...or any other pictures of the boat, really.

Thanks again.

As far as build quality goes I can't really judge. I did not see anything that stood out. Perhaps others can comment about that. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the motor, it was a single maybe a Suzuki 90. To me the motor is a buyer choice so I really don't care what they hang on the boat for a show. Note that the boats were not shown under the Sea Sport or C-Dory vendor name. They were displayed under Kitsap Marina's name. Shown were a 16, the 22 cruiser, a Venture 26 and a Tomcat.

And one thing I forgot to mention earlier, the seat upholstery has buttons in the center. I was told Sea Sport does that on their boats. I'd get rid of those in a hurry.

I too would be interested in the seat change, maybe one that rotated. I believe the Venture seats rotate. Would love to have the extra storage under the bunks. I just changed out my group 24 battery to a 27 and still had to go in on an angle and lost a drop or 2 of acid so cannot imagine a smaller hatch.

Barry,

Thanks for starting this. I took a bit of a look-see too. Seemed like the workmanship was well done. Agree, it was shinier inside, at least more so than our '05. These are things I noted that you didn't include;

1. There was an aluminum looking metal strip (like a carpet edge sort of) around in the cockpit, and at the junction where the aft cabin bulkhead meets the cockpit floor.

2. It has a raised, level cockpit floor, and there was a bilge pump, aft, under the splashwell, in a ~8x12" well.

3. The V-birth cushions hide a fairly large access port into the storage area below. I don't think I saw any foam in there. I did move both cushions and there are hatches on each side.

4. The anchor hatch looked nice. I should have crawled up in there to see what it looked like inside, and where the drain was. Now that I think about it, I didn't see a drain outlet outside. Somebody check on that for us too please.

Except for the V-birth hatches, I have to agree, the access points provided were very small like this, especially the lazarette hatches. I would guess a group 24 would have to turn on end to go through.

The forward hatch, looked different than ours does.

Looked nice, and like the color.

Thanks Matt, for bringing out the cool toys :thup :thup

I posted twelve pictures of Seasport's 22' C-Dory Cruiser in my photo album. Tyboo or Da Nag, please feel free to move them to where ever you wish. It looked like a nice fit and finish to me.

An interesting set of pictures of the new CD22 (thanks Forrest).

It appears there is a valve on the water spout. That suggests there may be an electric water pump rather than the footpump.

Does the boat still have lights over the dinette and galley (pic's do not show lights or wiring...)? If not, a single light near the opening hatch might not give enough light for meals or food preparation.

...and yea, that lazarette is pretty Small!

Best,
Casey

Thanks for posting the photos, Forrest. That helm seat looks nice - more "bucket" than the former stock seat. And if it comes with a color insert (as it appears) that matches the rest of the interior, it would be a nice retro-fit.

Over all, it looks like Sea Sport is keeping the premise of the C-Dory intact. Bigger access hatches wouldn't take much for them to incorporate. Since so many of us use these boats for cruising, access to our stored goods is a significant consideration. I guess we'll see if anyone from Sea Sport is watching.

And, if they are watching/listening, I have some suggestions to make their CD-25 even more functional. (I understand there wasn't a CD-25 at the SBS.)

Best wishes,
Jim B.

You're welcome Casey and Jim. Casey if you look at the first picture and look through the windows into the boat you can see a light over the galley. I'm pretty sure there was one over the dinette as well. Some of my pictures were suppose to show the fit and finish which in my opinion was very nicely done. You could say it is as it should be since it was their first boat and they probably want to make a good impression, but you can go look at the Seasports and see that they do a quality build on anything they produce. Being a fisherman I always drool over the Seasports. The fuel economy, the initial cost of our boats and my personal budget always brings me back to our style of boats though. It seemed to me that the price of the Seasports has dropped from last year. Can't say for sure since I'm not in the market. Speaking of beautiful boats, did anyone notice that Hinckley thirty plus footer that was a mere $800,000 that was near the C-Dory display? WOW!

Thanks for the photos, Forrest. It looks like the changes from my '08, in addition to those already mentioned are:

1. Two bars on the center opening window for support. Presumably this will help keep it open when bouncing around.

2. Wood style cabinet doors. Not sure what material these are. I think I prefer the white with teak trim on my boat.

3. Sink moved forward and to the corner (pressure water is nice!). Wallas was also moved forward. Change in placement of Wallas control and no fiddle wrapping all the way around the galley counter.

4. You can see the screws that attach the fiddles. Maybe mine are just attached with adhesive, but I'm pretty sure there are screws that are covered by wooden plugs.

5. Metal instead of plastic trim in cockpit. I think I prefer the look of the plastic trim. By the way, the cockpit/bilge pump configuration looks to be the same as on my '08.

6. It looks like there is no storage under the sliding seat. That's unfortunate, since my boat has a cabinet there.

Overall some interesting changes. Without being on the boat I can't comment on build quality, but it looks good overall, but I'm very happy with my Fluid build 22.

Yes it is now an electric pump for the sink. They got rid of the foot pump. The cut out for itin the molding is still there just no pump.

Just a kind note:

Before you get a case of ESWPE (Electric Sink Water Pump Envy):

I have an electric pump in my much older 1987 (first year of the "Cruisers" following the "Classics").

We've come full circle on this one, from electric pumps, to hand pumps, to foot pumps, and back to electrics.

The biggest issue with electrics is that they supply (and you can therefore waste) a lot more water than manual ones. Much faster, almost wasteful, delivery than a slow hand pump.

That 18 gallons of water under the dinette seat can go very fast when washing dishes if you rinse them off with the pump running.

Paper plates can solve part of that problem, at least!

Many thanks for the fine photos and comments. Does anyone know what the selling price for the Sea Sport C Dory is (fully equipped with engine and trailer?

Most likely, if you lift the seat cushion off of the sliding seat, there would be plenty of access for storage in that compartment. (At least that is the way it is on my '04 Cruiser). I keep a spare prop, spare parts, a large 1st Aid Kit and a tool kit in that area.

The helm seat looks like a great addition. All we need now is defrosters for the front windows. Looks like a nice clean boat!

I liked the new cd-22 the cockpit has a great step for getting into the boat what an improvement over that little step . I like the pressure water system and now you can tee in a rear washdown thats what I had done with the Duck (99 cruiser) .I also liked the table mount much better system . The wood trim looks pretty nice also . I think the price was 55k with 90 Suzuki and trailer but not sure . I'm glad that Sea Sport will be building a Quality product and that the boat is already sold good thing for all us C-Brats

Jim, It was good to see you at the SBS CBGT again.

I forgot to mention the cockpit and step. The step is much longer than on our 05. Nice, but it is still at the 1/3rd up from the cockpit floor distance, leaving a pretty big step to get up and over the gunnel. This is something that really needs to be addressed, because, some of us are not getting any younger, and that 2/3rds distance is a big heft for our sore old knees.

I like the idea of a 2 step step, with access for storage, maybe fuel or batteries, (one each side), moving that weight forward from the transom.

The cockpit flooring (sole) was nicely done, if you want to have that level floor and step.

Just my thoughts
