Routine Maintenance on a Honda 90

I have not had my Honda 90 to the dealer for "routine maintenance" for a couple of seasons. I've been using a more local Johnson dealer for the winter/spring "prep".

I called the Honda dealer figuring the local guy might be missing something on a factory check list. The dealer quotes me $470 while the local guy thinks he'll do everything the Honda guy will do for $200 plus I supply the parts.

Does anyone know exactly what is suppose to be done on a Honda 90 with about 300 hours and how much it should cost?

I think what is done depends on which Honda dealer you go to. Some will say to check/set the valves, others do not. My dealer is recommending that in addition to the normal lube/oil change, that they pull the lower leg and ensure that there is no corrosion on the bolts, replace the impeller and put it back together. For my Honda 90 and Honda 8, the quote was around $500, but they also have a 15% off right now.

I would ask specifically what your dealer would do, then negotiate with them

Hi Phil,

If you have a shop manual and you’re a back yard mechanic most maintenance can be performed at home. The only maintenance procedure requiring a little finesse is checking the valve clearance and changing out the timing belt.
Changing the oil, lubricating various parts, replacing the spark plugs and fuel filter are easy.
The shop manual is relatively easy to understand and walks you through every maintenance procedure on these motors, and gives a detailed maintenance schedule that you won’t find in the owners manual.
If you uncomfortable doing your own repair and maintenace having the shop manual handy will at least give you insight as to what needs to be done and the parts required for the job.

My Honda 90 just broke 200 hours so as I recall the maintenace shedual required me to:
Change oil in power head and lower unite
Change oil filter
Replace spark plugs
Grease zerts
Apply lubricate to various parts to include prop shaft
Check for loose nuts-including the mechanics’
I also douse everything with silicon spray before tucking in the winter.

If you've got a good mechanic you trust I’d use him, you never know who will be performing the work at the dealer.

If someone else perfumes the maintenance other then you check the motor closely when the work is done, especially the oil levels; got horror stores I won’t go into.

Side note: any part bought at the dealer or having Honda printed on it will triple its cost; filters, grease, oil, and sparkplugs can all be cross referenced at an auto parts store.

What is the expected life (hours) of the belt on a Honda 90?

My 90 has not seen a wrench since I installed it in 1997 and 1200 hrs. ago other than oil/filters/lower unit/shaft grease/plugs etc.

You're past it by about 100 hours from what I remember.
