After a 10 day solo venture I think I need a winlass. I'm 6 hours from the closest dealer and tried to have one installed while at the coast. Is this something that a reasonably handy person can do?? I've got the tools and understand that every hole you drill is an invitation to dryrot. The anchor has never been used and I used a spare on the trip to keep the road clean. Any advice appreaciated.
Thanks
Hank

Hank,

Several Brats have installed windlasses, me included. It was easier than I expected. The hardest part was getting my nerve up to drill that big first hole in the deck! Actual installation is very straightforward if you are careful and not in a hurry. I use a Lewmar V700 windlass and am quite satisfied. I used 8 gauge marine wire. Search the site for something like "installing windlass" etc. and you should find a lot of information.

Hank if you end up getting one dont get a wimpy one Ive had a few of the sprint 400 s do yourself a favor and get the biggest one you can The cape cruiser came with a sprint 400 not the best for this size boat If I was buying a new one id get a 700 just my 2 cents Jim on Jenny Katz
